Myself and my family are wanting to move to Perth. My husband has had his own home improvements company for the last 6 years but has no qualifications to prove he can do all the trades he can.

I have tried and tried to get the answer to this question, can he apply for a permenant visa without qualifications, but he can provide all the proof that has been requested under the self employment section in the TRA assessment guidelines for a Painter/Decorator?

Can anyone help, we would really appreciate it.

Hi

I have no qualifications and my visa has just been logged. I had to provide 5 yers work history as I was also self employed. I got references from my old companies where I was employed and then had to prove that I was doing the job I was doing by by providing things like adverts I had put out, tax returns, but you can even use things like a picture of a sign written van, references from people your husband has done work for, reciepts showing paint supplies etc. THen he would have to confirm how he was linked to the business such as accounts or self assesment tax return form.

Mine was for a 457 visa but I am sure you could go for this in the first instance and then apply for perm residency

Hello

If you believe that Hubby's main (or most easily demonstrable) skill would be as a Painting Trades Worker, the paper qualification required would be the Aussie AQF III certificate or its overseas equivalent:

http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/occupations/p/painting-trades-worker.htm

He could get an AQF III without leaving the UK as long as he can meet the relevant criteria for doing so:

http://www.australianskillassessments.com/

As far as I know, ASA are still trading and they are UK-based though the company belongs to Darren Le'ake and another chap who are both Australians.

In 2008, a friend of mine who is a Painter & Decorator obtained an AQF III, without leaving the UK, via ACTS/Trade Train:

http://uk.tradetrain.com.au/

That company is based in QLD and I do not know whether they still operate in the UK. A phone call to them would probably elicit the answer.

Cheers

Gill

I would like permenacy but I think for me it was a case of money - I wanted a quick route and liked the idea of the 457 visa as its long enough to make sure you really want to stay etc.

Hi Gill

Thanks for the info, we will look into that.

Is it correct that once you are in Australia it doesn't matter what trade the husband does, so if he were to go down the painter decorator route would he then be able to do other trades in Australia or is he stuck with one trade?

Cheers

Is it much easier to get a 457 and how long have you got until it expires?

My concern would be due to us having young children, getting them settled and then there is no guarantee we would be given a permanent visa.

Hi Mel

It would depend on his visa.

If he obtained a skilled independent visa then he could do whatever job(s) he liked in Australia. With some of the employer-sponsored visas, there could be complications if he did not stick to the job nominated in the Contract of Employment.

How old is Hubby, please? Do you have any contacts in WA who might be able to persuade a local employer to offer him a job and visa sponsorship to go with it?

Cheers

Gill

Hi again, Mel

From your point of view, a skilled independent Permanent Residency visa would be preferable, for sure. However, are you aware of the new Expression of Interest idea which will come into force on 1st July 2012?

With the EoI scheme, Hubby would have to get an AQF III. The cost of that would be about £2,000 GBP. Then he would have to get a skills assessment from TRA. I think those cost $300 AUD though I have not checked recently. Then he might need to do an ELTS test in order to get enough Points for a skilled independent visa: about £115 GBP, I believe. Then he would really need State sponsorship from the Government of WA if possible - that costs about $259 AUD, I believe. If you enlisted the services of a Registered Migration Agent to help you with all this, add another £2,000 GBP to avoid giving yourselves a fright with the figures.

AFTER you have done all of the above and spent all the money I have decribed, then and only then will it be possible to submit an Expression of Interest. DIAC (see below) would then add Hubby's details to a skills matching database. If en employer makes contact offering Hubby a job, he might be more likely to be invited to apply for a visa than if no employer comes forward.

According to DIAC, this new EoI scheme will enable DIAC to select "the Brightest and Best" from amongst the wannabe visa applicaticants. According to me and several friends of mine who are very senior, well-known Registered Migration Agents, only "The Best Of the Rest£ will even bother to jump through this hideously expensive series of hoops when they have absolutely NO certainty that they would be invited to apply for a visa unless they are a doctor, a nurse, a Secondary School Teacher or similar. I think the Australian Government is flattering itself, frankly, about the notion that the Brightest & Best Painter & Decorator would bother with this nonsense.

Apart from the handful of skills where an invitation to apply for a visa is overwhelmingly likely, the Brighest & Best are likely to sit tight and wait for a couple of years in order to gauge how the whole thing is working in practice before they spend any money.

Or MIGHT be possible to find an employer who is willing to offer sponsorship for an employer-sponsored visa and a job. I know a Bricklayer, a Roofer and a Plasterer who were offered employer-sponsorship, all for jobs in the Perth Metro area. Obviously, many, many other tradesmen have also been sucessful in this regard but there is never any guarantee of success unless and until an employer comes forward with a suitable offer.

Ergo, how old is Hubby? Could he afford to spend a couple of years (if need be) searching for an employer-sponsor whilst he waits to see how the EoI idea pans out in practice?

DIAC = Department of Immigration and Citizenship, whose website is below:

Cheers
