That's a bloody hard question Justine! They really are all pretty much the same. The "big four" are ANZ, Westpac, National Australia Bank (NAB), Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA). Another biggy is BankWest. Also Bendigo Bank is one of those community banks that was started by local communities to escape the big bank thing.....not sure how well it's doing though so can't really comment.

BOQ (Bank of Queensland) is currently on a big advertising spree that the managers that run the local branches also have ownership as well. That will be interesting & hopefuly a good thing because we have that ridiculous thing at the moment where India is taking over all the general account-keeping roles, and you can never speak to anyone that has any responsibility. I hope it works because I hate the way things are going!

Personally I bank ANZ & have never had much of a problem with them. NAB & Westpac are pretty good too.

Hi Justine - good luck with everything. Just as Amanda said, the Banks are all pretty evenly matched. The only thing I would be mindful of is bank fees - totally different to UK - get an account where you pay a monthly fee, but all transactions are included, otherwise you will get slugged big dollars. I think the Big 4 all do them, about $5 per month. ... Maria

We're with West Pac and have had no problems with them. We set up the account before we arrived and just called into the bank when we arrived to activate - our cards etc., were ready for us.

My only gripe was they phoned us to check that everthing was ok when we set it up - but forgot the time difference and it was 7am in the morning!!
