Guest harrybobin
Hello Please can anyone help me? I'm a mental health nurse and am in the process of applying for my regsitration with AHPRA and have am in the process of applying for jobs in WA. I have been trying to research relevant legislation that affects nursing practice but I'm completely lost with it. I have looked into code of conduct, code of ethics and the national competancy standards but my brain is frazzled now. Please can people advice me what other legislation and policies would be beneficial for me to find out about and where I can find it out. Any help would be great. Many thanks Claire
ali
The mental health act (WA) Occupational safety and health The Nurses Act Poisons Act I'd look at the childrens act too. MHA, Nurses ACT, Poisons and OSH are your 3 main ones. You might find these links useful to give you an idea of what's happening in WA MH http://www.chiefpsychiatrist.health.wa.gov.au/home/ http://www.mentalhealth.wa.gov.au/Homepage.aspx

ali
You won't need to write loads on them, just enough to show that you understand what they're about e.g. MHA is about least restrictive option, safety of person and others, includes the rights of patients etc.,
Guest harrybobin
Ali, you are amazing, I can't thank you enough for your help. On the selection criteria it asks about the continuous improvement process, have you got any advice for me on this? Is it similiar to clinical governance or am i totally barking up the wrong tree!! What area of nursing do you work in and where abouts???
ali
Yes, I'd go down the governance route. Here in WA there are 4 pillars of governance, consumer value, clinical performance and evaluation, clinical risk and Professional development and management. Here's a link - aimed at the strategic plan of 2008, but will give you enough to address the selection criteria. http://www.safetyandquality.health.wa.gov.au/docs/clinical_gov/1.2%20Clinical%20Governance%20Guidelines.pdf I work in Armadale in community mental health. Hope it helps Ali
