dunnyboy
il add my bit...im a heating engineer and have been for 27 years and we have been granted a 176 visa, i did my vetassess last year up in london as part of my visa application. your uk quals will get you a visa, but they wont get you a job down under. there is a company called down under tradies http://www.downundertradies.com/, they are based in west london and they do the cross over quals that you will require and also the white ticket. you are best off doing all of this in the uk, so that when/ if you do go to aus then you are armed and ready to start work....most aus plumbing co's wont even look at you unless you can start straight away with the right tickets. they dont want be wanting to put you on courses etc which tie up their funds and time. oh and the cost of this is around £3000....but its the easiest way. even with the correct tickets you will still have to be assessed at work in aus...bit like an apprentiship over here for a year before you are signed off to work off you own back. Georgiajoemillie
Hi , I going through process at the moment with getting my Australian level 3 certificate through vetasses . i was talking with a guy from vetasses and he had never heard of down under tradies and they can't give you any qualifications needed. i emailed the western Australia plumbing board and told me of a gap training course to do in Perth which is a lot cheaper. There have been a few debates on this forum and poms in oz about tradies down under and the general talk Is a money making scheme. im not trying to be negative but you have to go through vetasses or now tra to even get a sniff of a visa Ian
dunnyboy
strange to hear that about tradies down under....one of the guys that runs it was the guy who assessed me on my vetassess day. i also met him on his stand at the down under live exhibition in birmingham in february and he gave a speech on his company and did a q & a session. and ive been told several times that it is better to have your aus quals to hand before you arrive in aus, rather than spending time gaining the quals in aus when you could be working. Guest Cozzy
Hi All, I think in general its all a money making scheme much the same as it is in England. Theres Training centres everywhere competing for our money every 5 years!!The Ozzies are know different. If they can make a dollar out of us lot coming over they will and who can blame them. Ive been running my own Gas and Plumbing Company for 12 years and have been in the industry for 28 years since leaving school. You can never know everything in our Industry but after a while theres not much you having seen. Im in Perth for a month now on a little rekie/holiday and the Plumbing and Gas is much the same but you still got to adapt to there ways of installation and maintence. I would be carefull about doing any training in the UK (£3000 worth and find it dont stand up out here) apart from the Vetasses which is not really training more of a trade test to see if your a chancer or not. Any decent tradesman/women will walk the Vetasses. IMO you are better off doing your training here in Perth as the Ozzies prefer you too. Just budget for that time and costs before you come. You can apply for a Plumbing License before you come out from the WA Plumbers board and that helps you to be able to start work as soon as you have got your Ozzie gas cores done. (I will confirm that Licence info soon when I go and see them while here. It was the case in Brisbane but will check WA is the same). There is work here but it aint gonna come and slap you in the face you got to go and find it and be prepared to show a bit of willing. Its not what you know but who you know, but I tell you one thing the Brits really do stick together out here and help each other out. As I find out more info on the training I will try and post it here. (Ashley do your Vetasses for sure mate. You will either do Plumber/ roofer or Plumber/ Gas. Obviously you will do Plumber/ Gas. Then get your Visa and get your self out here. I take it you aint got 3 x kids and a Wifey in tow like me (bless them x) so you can just get cracking with it all. I got to worry about schools and kids settling in and all that aswell. Your at an age ( Im not well Jel honestly LOL) where you can just get your ass over and crack on!) Dave Heard this the other day and thought it was brilliant; Some Dream it will happen! Some Wish it would happen! Others make it happen! How good is that! The 6 bedrooms should be plenty enough room for you all. The Architect who designed it will show you round when you arrive. You can pay the $3 million dollars when you get here they said! Thats nice of them! :ssign7: (As you can tell we have been dreaming driving around Hilarys!!) I will report back via this thread. Im going out to for a day with an engineer 'A La Wanted down under'.
