Any Social Care Workers got any advice on the sector - Coming to Perth June/July time

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm a very excited lady at the moment, hubby has sponsorship and the visa process has begun!! I currently work in the Social care Sector and I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend any agencies/companies in Perth?? Hoping to be over June/July time and have been looking alot North of Perth to rent. Also, if anyone does have any info on companies with good reputation, do you know what rates they pay??

Any info would be much appreciated :)

Hi!!

exciting times ahead!!! im here 6 months and originaly from scotland too, were living in edgewater which is north, near joondalup, seems lots of brits are moving to the area!! its a lovely area tho i luv it, lots to do and we find the commute pretty good so far!!

im in social care, have been for 15 years, i had planned on not working when i first arrived and taking time to stay at home with my 2 year old but i was lucky to be offered a job with salvation army as i worked with them before... there are loads of jobs here in social care, many are with dept of child protection if u want to work with families and if its in another area i think ull find lots of oppurtunities in disabilites, older people.. residential units?? im lucky i just have 3 days per week, had enough of shifts and overnights so this suits me perfect. Money is slightly more than i was making in dublin, its around 25-35 an hour with most jobs iv seen? cant remember right now the websites i was looking at but ill pm u them later??

any other questions feel free to pm me.. sally army always looking for loads of workers too so ill look oout on our noticeboard!!!

if you can get a police record check done before coming out that will be great.. iv got one from dublin but not glasgow and its a nightmare trying to get it now!!! they need one from each country uv living in for the dcp check here...

anyway good luck with the big move!!!

Thanks very much for your reply,..... we have also been looking North, My hubby is going to be working down town area and he plans to get the train in and out so we are looking at areas close to the train line, it would be nice to just have the costs of running 1 car. We are heading over from Aberdeen, cannot wait, I'm so excited! We have 3 diff companies coming this week to give shipping quotes, then the fun will begin, :D So you're loving it then? My daughter was 3 in Feb, did you find it easy to meet with people/going to parent & toddlers type groups etc? Have you met in with much Brits then, we'll all be alot happier, lol!! God the weather here is rank, so depressing! Can't wait to enjoy outdoor life, so great for the kids!

I have recently done the HNC Social Care Course but unsure if its recognised over there? Do you know? I'm currently senior carer in a sheltered complex at the moment and enjoying it, I've experience in mental health and with young adults with learning disabilities too so I shouldn't stick for work. Like yourself I'm hoping to just do a few days per week as I'm not moving to the other end of the world to work weekends and evenings as I have done for years!

Did you ship things over if so who did you use? Have read some threads and seen an idea from some people. This site is good so much info!

If you can keep an eye out on any jobs on the notice board that would be super - much appreciated :) I have a police check from Nov but I will see about another 1 to take. Oh, does your child go to a child minder when you're working? Is there alot of child minders or private nurseries?

Will keep you posted on the move and once over could always arrange to meet up :)

Thanks again,

Jen

Hiya!!

I done the HNC years ago too, iv had no problems using it as my qualification, in fact after i took the job with salvation army i had 3 interviews with DCP that i cancelled but they were all willing to interview me on the stregth of HNC, i also have a degree in play therapy but that would not have been particularly relevant to the job anyway so im pretty sure u will be fine finding work with it! I work mainly with teenagers and families with addictions, done a stint ion residential just before coming out here but the sleepovers and weekends killed me!!! there are lots of jobs here, and lots of caual posts which might suit you and your wee one, thats what i done originally and then got offered the 3 full days which is ideal.

there are lots of private nurseries/creches here.. fairly expensive, about 80 dollars a day, i had kayleigh in 2 of of them and it was a total nightmare, she hates daycare centres, too many kids and we both were cying every morning.... total disaster but iv since found an amazing girl who childminds her in her own home for me, k loves it, goes skipping in each morning!! plus she babysits for us on the once in a blue moon i actually get out past 6pm!!! there are lots of options but i suppose its just sussing out what will suit your wee one better!

We shipped some stuff over, used crown relocations as hubbys company was paying anyway!! we left our house in ireland fully furnished so we brought over just personal things but i would recommend bringing as much as u can over as everything is mega expensive here.... things like beddings, towels, kids pjs and clothes i all find ridiculously priced.... id go to asda and stock up on george pjs haha!!!

My hubby travels by train into work each day and now we are walking distance to the stations its brill, its about 20 mins from city to edgewater and a five mon walk either end, trains are every 4 mins i think and its just under 10 dollars a day but that will be cheaper once he gets his smart rider sorted!! i drive into the city every day as i need my car to take kids around but even then its about 45 mins in peak times, 20 when its quiet, we had planned on 2 cars but once hubby seen how smooth the trains run we love having the one car, so much less cost involved!!!

i am loving it, all been really good so far, i met a couple of people thru playgroup and a couple of girls from this site, ive a couple of really good friends now, both scottish, which is good coz they are as mad as me!!! its is pretty easy to meet people, check out buugybuddys.com.au thats a great site and always arranging nights and days out. the stuff to do with kids is amazing, every weekend there are festivals and shows and outdoor cinemas and so much to choose from.. i think ull love it!!

my wee brothers just left aberdeen after living there for a year, he works with brewdog which i think is based up there!

anyway anything else just ask, ill pm u my email address too, and a wee meet up will be great when u get here!!

chat soon!!

Hiya!!

Thats us got our visa approved , woke up yest to the email, ssooooo exciting, it's all go now!!!

We have had a few companies in this week so far I prefer Crown seem professional over the others and have been the cheapest so far too!

My hubby arrives 23rd May and starts his new job 28th, I'm planning to follow on in a few weeks and hopefully he'll have found a rental for us by then, dont wanna be stuck at the parents too long or I will be coming over grey!! LOl!!

I was thinking,.... did you bring a stroller with you? As I'm taking my daughters assuming they give you it back between flights?? My husband doesn't think so but people will need them - grumpy sleepy kids between long haul flights gonna be pretty stressful if no buggy to put them into!!

Also, would the companies want an enhanced disclosure from me or just a police clearance form? As the disclosure is disclosure scotland may mean nothing to them, my hubby needed the police clearance form for starting his new job so he has picked me up a form too.

Hope your all having fun :)

What likes the weather just now? Do you see loads of spiders?? was reading some of the threads on spiders, hilarious! :)

Hiya mary,

im not that sure of mental health support worker, its not an area im familiar with so wouldnt have been looking, but there is quite alot of work in addiction and homeless sectors, check out anglicare. mercycare(i think) and the salvation army for vacancies as well as government websites...there are loads of jobs in residential settings, both youth and disability too. i suppose it will depend where u live too as it seems most addiction services n stuff are based in the city.. let me know if i can be of any more help!!
