Hi,

I am from Canada, just thought I would join PerthPoms, as we are looking to move to Perth.

Have already filed for a 176 visa in May, meds and police checks done.

Maybe going down sooner on a 457 if job offer for OH comes through.

Looking forward to meeting lots of others who find WA great.

Cheers

Karen

Hi Karen

Glad to hear you're coming to join us!

I'm a pom ('Brit' to you Canucks) but my husband is Canadian. Originally he is from Hillsdale, Ontario (between Barrie & Midland I'm told) but in his grown-up years the family moved to B.C - Vancouver Is.

We met over here about 5 years ago; I immigrated from the UK in 95 & he immigrated from Canada in 98. His brother & sister-in-law came over more recently just 18 months ago.

You'll no doubt find it very expensive here compared to home, but income is also much better - so it all evens out at the end of the day.

We're both 36, no kids unfortunately but two dogs (that are treated like kids ) and all in all, we both love Perth - it really has everything that most people could ask for.

Have you been before? When are you expecting to arrive?

Cheers,

Amanda

Canada is so beautiful, and the people just the best. Why are you coming here, is it for the year round climate? (if you don't mind me asking)

Hi Amanda, I nearly went to Calgary to live a couple of years back, the money there is comparable to here, I guess Alberta and WA have many similarities.

Hey Greg. Yes similar places in many ways (except the weather of course!). My husband still misses a lot of the scenery & wildlife of home, but the overall lifestyle here is much better...as a matter of personal opinion of course. My brother-in-law who has been in Perth only a year is still struggling to adapt a bit ....thinks we're a bunch of red-necks & a bit behind the rest of the world! Which we are I guess, but that's what I like about the place!

He & my sister-in-law both earn about $30-50k a year more here than they did in British Columbia, which helps, but they think the cost of living is proportionately higher.

I agree with you though - Canada is a beautiful place & the people are very friendly.. and you've got to love the way they speak, eh?

;-)

Hi Amanda and Greg,

Thanks guys for the welcome.

We are looking to move to Perth around December if our visa comes through. Although it maybe sooner, looks like hubby has a job offer and we sent them an email, stating that if they needed him sooner, we would be open to a 457 (just have to go offshore when our 176 is granted).

If this all comes through, his company would be located in Belmont, so we are looking SOR. I have looked at Atwell and Sucess as they have some newer houses there, not sure of what they are like though?

We have 14 year old twins who would be entering into high school this year in Canada, so finding an area with an okay high school is important.

As far as moving to Perth goes, I guess we had a choice, move to Alberta (and still live with winter for 5 months) or try and emigrate to Australia... as you can see Australia won hands down. I think that we just got fed up of not being able to do anything for 4 or 5 months, my hubby is a golf nut, and can only golf maybe 5 months of the year. Neither of us ski anymore and my girls are summer girls, who would spend 8 hours a day in a pool (they were in competetive syncrohnized swimming).

Also moving to Australia gives my husband a chance to get off the tools (he is in HVAC in Canada... doing installations), a chance he would never get here in Canada. So all in all, it looks like better weather, better job opportunities and a more laid back lifestyle appealed to us.

I am looking forward to our move to Australia... we have never been before, so it will be very exciting. Looking forward to spending some more quality time with the family.

Well thanks again for the welcome. Amanada I might PM you if I have some questions.

Thanks again

Karen

He and me both! I am still working on trying to see the charm of it though!
