daftdeb
Is Ageism alive and kicking in WA? Hubby and I are in our early 50s, Australian Citizens, registered with appropriate bodies re employment (social work and science/math teacher). We have been living in Melbourne for the past 5 years but returned to the UK in November as my poor mum died suddenly and I couldn't cope with my dad being all alone in the UK. Anyway, that's sorted now and we want to come back to Oz by the end of the year but to WA as it was our intention to move there anyway. I'm just worried about work, especially as our age is against us. Can anyone let us know of their experience or if they have heard anything re employment for the over 50s and how difficult it can be. We would both be willing to do other things, infact hubby used to be a plasterer and has been doing quite a bit of plastering since we've been back. Look forward to hearing from anyone who can help. Guest AJ1964
Hi there Deb , I had the same worries . I have just got to 48 on the chronometer. I managed to find work without too much difficulty , and had some backup offers as well. I am a but concerned about getting citizenship , but certainly I have not found age to an issue. I have 3 other colleagues who's age range from 44 > 47 > 50 and they have all found good employement and are having a great time and this is in Perth, Melbourne, Sidney and Brisbane . This is all in Engineering finance and IT . Hope this helps. AJ
Sal
It's very much who you know in WA - once you've got a foot in the door you'll be fine - just getting in is the initial problem whatever age you are. If you already have Oz experience you are ahead already.
Sarab
I agree with Sal, it is hard to get you're foot in the door I have 12 years marketing experience from the UK & have been in Perth 2 months & lost count of how many jobs I've applied for and only had one interview which went no where. I never struggled in the uk to get interviews - I think there is pommie-ism rather than ageism!!
daftdeb
Thank you all for replying. I'm thinking that one of us needs to come over first, find work and then the other follow. I hate being back in the UK but the good thing about it is, it's made us realise where we want to be.

Have you consider Melbourne or Sydney?
Sarab
There's plenty of marketing jobs coming up I've applied for loads & getting no where fast. Lack of Perth experience I've been told. We have to stay here 2 yrs due to state sponsorship visa through my partners job - even he struggled and he's on the skills list but he has got something but a lot wouldn't look at him due to lack of Perth experience too - I'm starting to think Perth is a very narrow minded place!!
