Ho to all secondary school teachers.

We are looking to move out to Perth by Oct / Nov 08 (waiting for visa 175 to be issued - posted Oct07).

I've done lots of research re. the secondary education system in WA. I will soon be applying for my reg. no. from WACOT - I understand that this can be processed at any time, and they will give me my number after providing proof that my visa has been issued.

What is it really like teaching in WA? Would you recommend state schools? Independent? Church schools? Why / why not?

So many questions...any advice would be appreciated!

Many thanks

Neil

I read your post with interest as I am currently emigrating to Perth and am a qualified Computing teacher. I have applied for my WACOT number but its been ages, how long did it take you?

Are you settled in Perth now? Did you get a job easily enough?

Hi folks,

My husband and I are due to move in August and we are just getting our references sorted before we apply to WACOT. We were originally going to Queensland but a supply agency warned us that there is a massive surplus of teachers so we would struggle. We have now resorted to the option of not shipping any of our stuff and going over with just a suitcase so we can move where the jobs will arise. We are under the impression that WA is best. If we can share all the information we know and equally you can share what you know hopefully we can all have a better idea of the current situation! I hope to hear from you soon!

Hi All I'm not a teacher but have three boys in the public system. My experience here is that teaching as a profession seems to be more highly respected than in the UK. There seem to be great support networks for teachers within the schools. I notice they work very much as a team and are very passionate about what they do. The kids respond to this extremely well.

Not sure on where is the best state for teaching jobs.

Perhaps contact www.skillsshortageconsulting.com

Here's a link for teaching jobs in WA http://www.det.wa.edu.au/jobs.asp

All the best.

Hi,

Thanks for your ave reply- that is nice to hear something positive as we been being warned of the difficulty of getting a job. Here in the UK it is the opposite as they cannot get enough teachers at all. Maybe there are less jobs in OZ because the teachers don't leave!

How long have you been in Perth?
