nollie
when we first started our process, we asked a forum should we come over with limited stuff ie boxes,.. and boy did we get slammed, reading other threads now peps seem to have travelled over happily with few boxes and cash, and have managed to fill a house with new stuff. We will have between 10 - 15,000 for shipping and to bring with us, so do we use less for shipping and buy new???? We have a tiny house here in the uk, and apart from kitchen bits and bedding (which in my mind is defo) we only have 2 couches, 2 tvs a double bed and four single beds and tools. tools will prob be a defo too. what do you guys think??? ps we are so excited to be starting our adventure, and the bonus of only one visa needed... Guest NIKKIJW
hi there we are in a similar situation deciding what to take all or nothing. it depends on the quality of the furniture you have and how old it is. we have come to the conclussion how old is the item is it worth paying to have it shipped and buy new there. over the last few years we have not bought new furniture so we are leaving most of ours behind this includes garden and conservatory furniture, why pay to have it shipped and sprayed, when you can buy new when you are there. we have decided to take our new beds and 3x sofas, dinning chairs, kids games etc., and tv's and comps and personal effects (which is quite a lot) i decluttered about 10 months ago you have to be tough. dont forget there is an ikea there and other good furniture stores. hope this helps
Scot01
As well as IKEA there are also shops that sell cheap Indonesian imports from the likes of Bali - I am presuming it is cheaper than what would you'd buy in the UK as it doesn't have so far to travel!! Tony Sadlers used to be stocked to over flowing with wooden Indonesian furniture but I see they've become more modern now as well - have a look here - http://www.tonysadlers.com.au/furniture.php
Guest Tony4052
We have just bought a load of furniture from here http://www.superamart.com.au/ and made the mistake of shipping all our junk furniture from the UK. We will probably end up putting it all on Gumtree... LOts and lots of choice here and it looks to be good quality too...
Give me a break!
Superamart, Fantastic Furniture, Furniture Spot, Pine Discount Furniture, and sometimes you can get a good deal at Harvey Norman, some of it is pricey yes. I would say if you furniture is in good nick and its neutral in colour bring it, if like me ours was getting a tad worn, leave it and buy new here. nollie
thanks guys, will be spending some time today looking at all these sites, yep our furniture is old and some is second hand.... time to rethink again lol
fiona
Yeap we made that mistake. I read all the forums and went into panic mode and said " we need to ship everything etc". We arrived in Oz 3 weeks aga and I am now kicking myself because we have brought some great bits to survive unitll the container arrives. I now wish I had not bothered with some of the stuff that is on the way. We went into Good guys and got all the TV, freezer for a bargin, a great sofa bed from Furniture spot. KMart for cheap and cheerful kettle, toaster etc. So I would say it is all personal choice. Fi
Philpom
Fiona is right re. kitchenware. You could buy kettle, toaster, etc. at Kmart cheaper than you could get it from Argos. Our kettle was only $15 and it's still going nicely 2 years later. All those furniture stores mentioned will give you bargain goods and relatively good quality. If you had more to spend then you could go to the likes of Harvey Norman or Freedom, but you would have to be prepared to open the wallet a lot more. Give me a break!
OOH while I think about it Appliances Direct are really good and cheap for white goods, free delivery too. Kmart do a complete kitchen starter set with everything for $80, might not last forever but gets you started.
fiona
LOL we brought the kitchen started pack and it has been ok for now - till my stuff arrives then it will go in the bin.
JaynBev
We also have the starter pack & it works great on several items but others (pans for example are basic stop gaps) We just finished unpacking our gear after not having any of it for over 4months (we rented furnished so had it in storage till we found an unfurnished place). The biggest comment we kept getting is: Why did we bring so much sh**e??!! Lots of our stuff was old (sofas etc) and when you look at the octs per cubic foot to ship vs the cost to buy new (allowing for the fact in a year or two max we will replace these anyway as they do now look VERY old)it would have been miles cheaper to ship less gear. We thought we had done the research on this but we didnt do enough. Our recommednation is: make a list of all you bringing, allow about 5pounds per cubic foot in shipping costs to work out its transport value, price up a new alternative out here Guesstimate how long at most you will keep the item before you replace it if you do ship it Decide whats the best option. We would have left our TV & Sofa behind for definite - Our 7year old LCD TV looks tiny over here and it's a 40inch screen, it cost a lot to ship and cannot work with the Aus signal (we knew that but a freeview box etc isnt worth adding to it) a new Plasma 59inch TV only cost us $1800 whereas the same TV in the Uk is selling for almost 3k. But would have brought across all our chest of drawer units that we shipped. For example a malm 6 drawer unit in Uk Ikea is 85 pounds - exactly same unit here is $279!! Hope this is a little help to you
phil
Some people say bring everything, some say bring as little as possible. There's no right or wrong, it's down to you really! The factors that helped decide what was coming with us included sentimental value, cost of shipping its' volume, cost of replacing it, could we live without for a few months waiting for it to arrive i.e. is there any point shipping something you'll have replaced by the time it arrives anyway. Scot01
I'd got to Good Sammys! (charity shop). get all your kitchen stuff for 20c each then donate it back when you've finished! They check all their electrical stuff - kettles $10! I've also bought IKEA quilts, sheets and covers from them too - wash them first!! Philpom
It was mentioned by Give Me A Break that Appliances Online is cheap and have free delivery and this is all true. I just did a cost comparison for a particular model of microwave to replace our 20yr old one and compared them against the Good Guys. The Good Guys offer the next model up from the one I was searching for, for $10 less than Appliances Online, when it actually supposed to have a RRP of $40 more. If your going out with a wad of cash to buy your white goods then maybe head to the Good Guys first (do your online comparisons first). nollie
fantastic guys thanks so much for taking the time to reply to this xxx we are now clear in our heads on a plan .... we are thinking bring washing machine (3 months old) bring dishwasher (1 year old) bring our tv (3 months old) and apart from that we have no bedroom furniture (all built in) our sofas are so old the are due to be burried so i will be picking my good stuff from the kitchen and all hubbies tools... hopefully now that will give us plenty to get new bits..... again i appreciate your time
riboid
I came over here with nothing. Went to a few garage sales, picked up some second hand suits. Went to scratch and dent places picked up washing machines, fridges etc and all for less than $10k. You'd be surprised that you can survive without all the jumble you have in the UK.
