Hello everyone

I have been a member of PIO for a few weeks and find the site great - just found this more specific site about Perth and hope it will be as good. We finally posted our TRA off on Friday - seems like its all real now the money has come out of the bank. Our youngest daughter has been accepted into Kolbe College which is a big plus for us - does anyone have any views on this college - it did come recommended but as we have not visited it (or even Australia for that matter) we are greatful for any info. Our house goes on the market on Monday so my fingers are constantly crossed these days.

Anyway - hope you are all having fun in this crappy weather, roll on a year ;-)

Hi Ali,

Thanks this site is really useful - did you have jobs to go to or did you wait until you got there?

Is Perth everything you expected it to be - did you visit before you emigrated?

Cheers

Hi,

We visited Australia in 2005 and visited my brother in Brisbane - also took in Cairnes and Sydney - at that time we hadn't thought of living here, but came home thinking ... That's for us. I loved Brisbane - but couldn't see myself livinging there. My brother was talking about getting a job in Townsville - so we thought that if we were going to do the move - we had to do it for us .. we decided Perth. I don't know that we had any expectations, but we like the relaxed way of life here. Living near a 'big bustling city' wasn't a must have - I've been into Perth far more times than I ever went into Manchester (I must be one of the few people who never visited the Trafford Centre!).

Hubby and I both had jobs fixed up. Me at Armadale hospital (I'm a nurse), hubby applied for jobs on Seek.com.au and got a reply from one company who said "sorry but we need someone to start right away" but ... they liked his CV and said they would keep it on file (heard that one before). About 2 - 3 months later - by this time, our visa was through and our flights booked - they got in touch and said a position was available - what was his visa status - he had a telephone interview, met them when he got here and started 2 weeks later. He enjoys working there, says the guys are great.

Hi Ali

Thanks for that - you seem to be happy and that's what counts.

How long did your visa take? Sorry to interrigate you, but it helps to talk to someone who has already walked the path.

How far away is Leeming from Rockingham?

Is Rockingham a bad place to live - I was reading a post on here and it seems like its not so good.

We have had our daughter's application for Kolbe Catholic College accepted so we will need to live near to her school which is why we are looking at Rockingham. Kolbe is private but the fees aren't too bad - and it is a better school than the local state school.

I am constantly sendning CV's to employers on seek - but they all say they want to wait until we have our visa - we haven't even sent that off yet still waiting back from TRA Arrrrrr!

Never mind - I will have to be patient.

Thanks for you replies

Sharon

Hi,

We are on our way to Perth next month, The TRA was a bit of a pain to get completed but my OH chased the references continually so it wasnt too bad. We started the process in april 07 had our medicals + police checks in early 08 and had our visas February 08. How old is your daughter? My son is 15 and we have not yet arranged a school (does that make me a bad parent!!) My house is still on the market but if it doesnt sell in time we will rent it out, we are looking at the Secret Harbour area which is close to Rockingham, but as I have never been to Australia either I could be wrong!

If nothing else it will be an adventure!

Hi Diane

Lovely to hear from you.

We have 2 daughters jess is 12 and she is the one we have got a place for at Kolbe college, Kirstie is 17 and just about to start 2nd year of A-Levels. That is what is pushing the move to June/July 09. Kirstie wants to take a year out and work when we arrive there. Your visa didn't seem to take that long - when did you send it in and did you use an agent?

Our 'for sale' sign went up today - scary!

I hope it will sell before June / July, not sure what we will do if it doesnt. We want the capital to take with us, but not the end of the world if it doesnt - as you rightly say if nothing else its an adventure.

We have got to a stage in our lives where we are in a rut and that's what is driving the move - we need excitment in our lives, and want to enjoy it whilst we are still young enough to remember it!

Lets keep in touch and you never know we may end up near each other out there

Hi, We got our visa in 2006 and it took 7 months which at the time felt like 7 years lol I've only been to Rockingham once and it looked OK - but my hubby has worked there a few times, and says that he'd probably chose one of the surrounding suburbs. I have a friend at work who lives in Pork Kennedy and she isn't particularly keen on Rockingham, but Rockingham is very popular with Brits and I haven't seen it for myself ... so can't really comment.

HI Ali

We have a place at Kolbe Catholic college - which is in Dowling Street, Rockingham WA 6168. It looks like Scott might end up working in Perth City - I just wondered if you could recommend an area central to these 2 places so we can look at property prices. We would like a property around $450,000 - $500,000 and near to the beach - do you think we would get somewhere for this money?

I do appreciate your help as we are confused here in Sunderland

Thanks Sharon X

I'm sure my colleague at work paid less than $500,000 in port kennedy and she really likes the area. Have you had a look at http://www.aussiemove.com it gives you a map of suburbs and distances plus average house prices - may help you decide which areas are affordable.

I think the train from mandurah to perth only takes about 45 - 50 mins
