Hi all

Me and the family are seriously thinking of moving to Perth next year,we've already been over visiting my sister and loved it,the only thing were concerned about is the work.My wife is a contracts manager and im a plasterer with my own property maintenance business. My sister is trying to help as much as possible but is having the same problem as us and that is "mixed answers" some people say theres loads of plastering work some say none, some say you get great pay some say terrible, ive also (along with millions of others)thought about the mines, which again gets mixed reactions some say easy to get in some say impossible. We would really love to make the move to Perth but dont want to do so and be skint.Any info and advice on contract managers, plasterers and mining jobs and wages would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

I cant comment on plastering. But with regard to mining, it is generally hard to get into without a mine specific skill / trade and plastering isnt one that would be in demand as all of the buildings are prefabricated. So you would be applying as an unskilled trainee. There is generally no shortage of such applicants meaning it can be hard to break into. However, Rio Tinto are advertising heavily at the moment. Be aware though that working in the mines is not what many believe it to be.

There are and trust me that all of those that are via agencies are crap. It's just them trawling to get CVs in the hope that they get the odd one they can try to sell. I have worked for several of the biggest miners and none will take inexperienced staff through them. Just not worth it as there are plenty of expressions of interest alone on the web sites.

I agree with verystormy I run a recuitment agency and dont get involved with the mines becuase every agency does that and no one looks after all the other companies in the metro. I supply companies that supply services to the mining industry and have managers, serviceman, mechanics, welders etc all over WA at mine sites but do not get involved in the unskilled side.

This was only a decision because a) we specialise in logistics & logistics training b) we didnt want to get tarred with the same brush as a lot of inexperienced so called recruiters who just throw adverts out to collect resumes to do nothing with them and C) I get as many people working in the mines as drivers, mechanics etc calling me saying they have had enough of the no-lifestyle in the mines and they can now earn similar money in the metro and be home very night.

As verystormy mentioned in another thread about the salaries people have a perception that the mines pay a lot of money compared to metro work. Maybe a few years ago but this is rapidly changing as companies know they have to pay more to keep or attract new employees. For example I have linehaul drivers who will earn $150, - $180k per year but they put the hours in to earn this. Same as the mines people talk about employees earning 6 figure salaries for what would be classed as unskilled work but they will be working 12 hour shifts 7 days a week for this so based on the hours worked in comparison I have van drivers that would earn well over this for the same hours.

The important thing in all of this though is what is right for you and your family. There are many people who arrive in WA wanting to be involved with the trade they ahve always mastered in the UK and after a while find themselves doing something completely different which ads to the excitement I suppose of changing your life completely.

Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

I have sent loads and loads of CVs to australian and new zealand employers and agencies, with no luck.

I have family in both countries. I am a construction machine driver, steel erector, glazer with all certification. I have been told its best been in the country to meet employers rather then sending direct. Any way i have been offered a job near perth, and the company are sponsoring me and paying for this as well. We are going on a 457 visa with my partner and two children. The money aint brill, $30 per hr, 45 hr week and after 35 hrs its overtime rate. The plan is getting my partner a job once there so at least we can then have a better standard of living.

Hi Graham

Congratulations on your job offer. It is a frustrating process and a lot of companies say they will speak to you when you arrive because I know a a few companies that used to offer sponsorship but people they offered to changed their minds at the last minute and was costing the companies a small fortune with lawyers and visas etc.

A lot of people also think than any company can sponsor anyone which is not the case. A company has to apply to DIAC to be granted an SBS to be able to sponsor from overseas and if they do get granted this it costs quite a bit to set up.

Good luck with the move and I hope you enjoy your new life down under.
