how much rent could I afford?

Recommended Posts

Would like 4 bed house in NOR suburbs, from looking at real estate websites these seem to average $600 pw. Is this a realistic/affordable option for an initial salary of $73000 (unsocial hours will be added) until OH finds work for a family of 4? I am aware that lifestyle would affect this but just based on usual utility bills, running of 1 car. Does anybody manage on this?

Thanks

I guess it depends on what kind of lifestyle you want and how frugal you are. I think you would be ok initially but I really do think that you need more that $73k to live in Perth. If your children are in school I would get a job school hours. I only have 1 teenager but I have heard that childcare costs here are crazy. I do know people who live on less but they only pay $400 per week on rent.

Thanks for the reply. We don't live an extravagant lifestyle and kids are a bit older so don't need childcare costs either. Obviously the cheaper the rent, the better, $400 pw would be great but the houses I've seen on the website seem to be around $600. My husband will be looking for work as soon as we arrive so we will have a second income but wanted to check if we could afford that sort of rent until he does.

I think you should be ok once the two of you are going to be working. $400 wont get you alot and if you want to live in a good area you definitely will pay more. There is only one of us working at the moment and we are definitely penny pinching. My husband has been looking for IT work for the last 6 weeks and has not found a job yet which worries me slightly because if he doesnt get work I dont know what we will do. I think once you have a bit of savings behind you, you will be definitely able to do it and if you have no childcare costs well happy days!! Just do a budget, buy your petrol on a Wednesday, shop around for your groceries and bargain hunt all the way :) thats what I do!

Thanks for the tips. You can never tell how long it will take to get a job thats why I'm trying to budget with one wage - anything else will be a bonus (or essential!). Hope your hubby finds work soon. Did you arrive in Perth 6 weeks ago then? We're arriving in July.

You get more value for you money if you live further south, I initially looked north, up near Joondalup, but have settled in baldivis, 35 mins train from the cbd, 5 bed house with pool for $460' a stones throw from my kids school.

Wow $460 for 5 bed house, that sounds great! We are initially staying in connolly but will have a look at areas when we arrive. We have never been before so don't have a clue. I will be working in subiaco and ideally don't want to be more than half hour away. We were just looking at NOR as thats what seems to be advised if you're working on that side. I suppose we can only tell when we get there.

Ok, if you're working in subi then ideally you need to be looking to live close to the Fremantle line unless you're going to drive. I too had no clue about the place before I arrived, one thing is for sure, get your temporary accommodation central. We did not, we spent hrs on the damn freeway driving north and soth everyday, it'll drive you insane, as the speed limit is 60mph on the freeway (if you can get to go that fast with the traffic) you'll fall asleep with boredom.

Yeah you never know how long it will take to get a job thats the problem. We arrived six weeks ago - well 7 now but the hubby has been looking for work for the past six weeks. We are originally from Dublin but we spent a year in Canberra - delighted we made the move but its a bit stressy when you are looking for work.

Hi Surhythms. Is it really cheap petrol on a Wednesday. I'm in Brisbane at the moment as Surhythms knows but husband in Perth and the rest of the family is moving there in September. They used to do that here in Brisbane. Certain days for cheap petrol but it seems to have stopped thank goodness. You get petrol coupons on your supermarket receipt to get 4 cents off a litre. Do they not do that in Perth x
