John Mason or Crown??

We can't decide!

We are shipping out via groupage as we don't have a full container, a John Mason rep came out and quoted us based on 182 cubic feet (£970) and when we queried AQIS charges (which weren't included in the quote) they said about $200.

Crown didn't come out (as they couldn't on the day we needed them to) so quoted us on 180 cubic feet (£1,159) including the AQIS charges.

There really isn't much in it, and we haven't met either of the reps (John Mason turned up a day earlier so my mum had to deal with them!) so can't get a feel for them that way. Both seem nice enough via email..... so we just can't make a decision!

Any opinions on either company?

Hi,

We also had Masons come out and they gave a very good comprehensive quote but we decided not to go with them as we actually got a better quote from Appleyards, they are based in Yorkshire and were about £250 cheaper.

They were absolutely brilliant, managed to squeeze our whole house, (somehow), into the container. The guys were also very efficient and speedy at packing everything - might be worth a go.....

Good luck!

Hi Polly, when did you move? We are in South Yorkshire so might give them a call. Do they do free quotes? Thanks.

Hi Jak,

We moved here at the beginning of April and we have brought our whole house over! Appleyards came the month before to Nottingham to give us a free quote. John, (the owner), was really helpful gave me 4 different quotes based on taking some of our stuff, hardly any and also taking all of it. He measured everything and gave lots of helpful advice.

We actually got 3 quotes from different companies, I liked the Appleyard approach better, ie it is a family run company and was therefore really personal, I know if sounds weird but he was very reassuring that nothing would be lost, broken, etc - anyway, his quote was initially slightly more expensive but after a quick call he priced matched Masons.

A week before our departure date he dropped off a pile of boxes so that I could pack some of my clothes, (if I wanted to). Then 3 days before his 2 guys came and packed up the whole house, beds, kitchen the lot and they still had time to play with my kids! Honestly, they made what could have been a really stressful few days really easy.....

Let me know how it goes....

we went with John Masons and they were excellent and wridgeways this end, just be aware that the AQIS charge is dependant on how much of your stuff aussie customs look through and how long they spend doing it, so i dont see how they can charge you in advance for this. we paid about $500 on a 20 ft container.

Hi,

We've had 2 quotes so far, one from John Mason and one from Anglo Pacific. Really like the John Mason surveyor, he really knew his stuff, made us feel very at ease and answered all our q's. JM quoted us for all our stuff we want to take as 651 cubic feet for £2750. AP quoted us for the same stuff at 601 cubic feet for £3200.

Also was confused about the AQIS charge as JM said it would be charged according to how long they take inspecting, whereas AP said he could work it out as its 70cents per cubic foot and therefore said ours would be about $400. So not sure who to believe on that one!

We are still awaiting quotes from White & Co, Doree Bonner & PSS later this month.

We moved over 4 months ago & used Crown.

We lost 1 box & had some other items damaged but they settled the claim in 24hours without a quibble.

Overall they not bad & we have nothing to compare them too, but you will need to chase the Perth office.

It cost us about 5.50GBP per cubic foot inc marine insurance

We've decided to go with John Mason. They both seem to get good reviews, so I don't think it will matter much in the end! We are going with our own shipping insurance though, someone recommended one on poms in oz and it came out at £450 cheaper than the insurance JM are offering!

So hopefully we might see some of our things in around 3 months time, not that we will have anywhere to put it all!!

Hi. we have had Anglo Pacific round. For a full 20ft container Hull to Perth. Quoted £4000 plus insurance. Is this a good price. We have rang other removal companies, and they said £4000 too.

I contated John Mason they then sub contract to Masons in Barry South Wales [where i live ] to come and do the estimating. I then went with Masons of Barry whos quote was cheaper and who would be doing the packing an moving of our belongings, bit pointless not to really. I have to say the guys who came to pack were really good. House packed up over 2 days but on the eve of the first day i fell broke my ankle. Our container had to be cancelled but Masons of Barry sorted everything they have stored my furniture for 3 weeks for no cost and my belongings are now being shipped on the 26/6 9 [am camped out on sisters living room was suppose to be for 5 days but turning out to be 5 weeks] to arrive in Perth on the 30/8. I cannot fault them so far been more than helpful with their advice. I had to cancel my container as it would have arrived when my hubby would have been out at site. I had a 20ft container with insurance for 4k .................... It is full to the brim [i think]

good luck

love n light

Just thought I'd update to say we had our shipping delivered on Friday!

Wridgeways are the Company that take over from John Mason on the Perth side of things and they have been excellent from start to finish. They emailed me to outline a timetable of forcasted dates (such as arrival, quarantine inspection, delivery date) and each time something was completed this would be updated and emailed to me so we knew what was happening each step of the way. We even got everything delivered 5 days earlier than forcasted as it cleared customs quickly!

The delivery drivers were very professional and arrived on the dot at 8.30am, all boxes put where we needed them and checked off the list.

Everything was expertly packed (we weren't there for the packing as we were back in Oz) and we were very happy everything arrived in once piece!
