Hi everyone, I've finally decided to register after lurking behind the scenes for a few days.

My husband (on here as Walmley_villa) has just been offered a job in Perth which fills us all with both excitement and horror! We have toyed with the idea of moving to Oz for years but haven't really given it any serious thought until now.

Obviously we have thousands of questions to ask and I'm sure we've started in the right place having found this forum.

We have two boys aged 15 and 11, hubby works in IT and I'm a bookkeeper.

We have loads of questions to ask regarding education, especially for our 15 year old, so I'd better get on and start reading and posting.

I look forward to 'chatting' with some of you on here soon.

Helen

Hi Helen,

Welcome and congrats! It's so exciting when you get that job offer then it's all go as it's no more talking about it's we're going!! :) My hubby also works in IT (Kinetic IT) and we're over on 457 visa, All happened so quick visa came through in 6 working days then it was all go! That's Steven done 2 weeks and settling in fine. I just came out on Mon and I've had a good past few days and getting a feel for the place. Just on the house hunt just now, just hoping house, me finding work and childcare all fits in, gonna be positive tho, it will! :)

You will find this site very helpful, I sat for hours on end reading through things and everyone is so helpful, always seems to be an answer for questions asked. If theres anything you want to ask just ask away.

All the best to you all and I'd be happy to meet up, like everyone on here we're all looking to meet folk and get a circle of friends!

Speak soon,

Jen

Hi Jen,

Thanks for your response.

Wow, you did move quickly didn't you :smile2:. It's great to hear from someone who has literally just arrived - it must all be so exciting for you at the moment and I suppose a little daunting too?

I really need to get to grips with the education system over there and I'm making that my main priority at the moment. It has to be the right move for our 15 year old as he's at an important point in his education.

Luckily, both our boys are more than happy to give the move a go and our families have given us their blessing, which means a lot to us.

How many children do you have?

Good luck with the house and job hunting. You're right, you have to have a positive state of mind - that'll always see you right in the end.

It would be great to keep in touch and meet up once we're over in Perth!

All the very best,

Helen

Yeah it sure is, all decisions decisions at their age eh! Great they are up for the move tho, hopefully they will have more opportunities over here and love it!

My daughter is only 3, only have 1 child so schooling hasn't really been a big factor for us right now, so that has taken some stress off the move as it must be so hard the older your kids get to move.

I wish you all luck with your big move.

Speak soon,

Jenna

Hi helen, congrats. In a similar boat. We are moving to Bunbury in october and have 4 children. my oldest son is also 15 and quite excited about a move to oz. He is currently sitting his junior cert exams. my husband visited schools last week there (on a 3 day visit to western australia) and was very happy with the senior secondary school. I have a question for people who have kids that came into the secondary school system from ireland/uk. The school have said (according to his date of birth march '97) that we will start year 11 in feb '13. My sister lives in melbourne and moved from the uk 7 years ago with 5 children. she feels that year 11 would be too stressful as it is an exam year. So i dont mean to take over your post but when i saw that your son is also 15 i just wondered what ear he would be going into. Best of luck with the move. thanks, annie

Hi Helen, we are heading to Perth in September. We have a 12 year old daughter who will be completing her first year at senior school in July and isn't impressed that she has to go back into a junior school when we arrive in Perth.

Hi Annie,

It's good to hear from someone who's also got a 15 year old son - it's thinking about his stage of education that's making my head spin at the moment!

You're right about the school year - our son was born June '97 and he would start Year 11 in Feb. Apparently Years 11 and 12 are stressful and very important years but no more so than here I would think.

Keep in touch as I'd love to hear how your move goes.

All the best, Helen

I bet she isn't impressed after a year with the older kids. Oh well, I'm sure she'll think nothing of it after a few days of her new school.

Good luck with the move. I'll watch out for your updates.

Morning Helen

Arrived in Perth 23rd May '12 and living in Karrinyup (or will be when our rental agreement has been signed on Sunday). We have 2 boys (14 &4) and a 1 year old girl.

Some things have been plain sailing and have also had bumpy times over the last few months so have learnt and are still learning.

Your questions no doubt will be endless so if I can be of any help please just let me know

Sharon

Thanks Sharon,

You're right, our list of questions is endless and I feel a bit overwhelmed at the moment. I keep swinging from really wanting to make the move to wondering what on earth we're thinking of! All natural feelings, I guess?

I hope everything works out great for you and your family - no doubt we'll speak on here again soon.

Best wishes,

Helen
