Hi all, wondered if you can give some advice...

I will be moving to Australia from Manchester in Dec/ Jan at the end of this year and still undecided of where to go.

I am a Nurse and my partner has just been made redundant from the RAF as a fitness instructor. i'm 27 and he is 33.

We love the beach and being outdoors, yet probably dont want to be any further from CBT than 45 min drive/ train journey. Initially we would like to live in an apartment with a communal pool and gym etc so we can hopefully meet new people quicker. We would love somewhere with nice cafe's and restaurants/bars etc and other young couples/ families. How far is the beach from the mountains if my partner were to start a business doing ountain biking/ rock climbing etc?

Can anyone share what they love about Perth and why its a good place to live as we are still undecided between Perth, Sydney and Melbourne??

Any help is appreciated!!

we left Mcr nearly 7 yrs ago and haven't looked back !

not sure why you don't want to be far from the city, if you want shops and restaurants/bars there's plenty of other places on offer. with your occupation/skills you could work out of town...besides if you get further out of town you're closer to areas for bushwalks/mountainbiking/hillwalking (sorry, no mountains) and the beaches are still close by.

what is it you want to do in your leisure time? that might help perth poms guide you.

we're in baldivis: 10 mins to great uncrowded beaches, 5 mins to train station, 2 mins to freeway, 40 mins perth. it's a very new suburb, so looks neat & tidy, but it's also semirural. we came here intending to use it as a base to look round till we found where we wanted to live....and after looking everywhere it seemed, we realised we had all we needed here, so we've stayed put. the place is full of poms, who spend lots of time in the parks here - cos they can !! - with kids, dogs, friends etc and almost everyone greets everyone else when they meet . there's the Rockingham/Kwinana hospital nearby (10 mins) plus there's gyms/leisure centres to keep your partner busy till he finds his way around. it's quite common for personal training/boot camps etc to be run in the local parks, so something like could give him the opportunity to start a business...but not mountain biking/rock climbing...not without a long distance commute !

as for why we're here...relaxed laidback lifestyle compared to Manc. there's still times if we go for a coffee at the beach we feel like we're on holiday. we've visited both Melb and Syd...if you want the Manc city buzz, go there. if you want something less hectic and more of an outdoor lifestyle come to WA. the waether in Syd & Melb can be more "English". in Perth its more mediterranean.

Thanks Pat and Mike,

That's really useful. I should've said I am a cosmetic Nurse (botox etc) so would ideally be looking to work in clinic or with a plastic surgeon and I assumed these are mainly nearer the CBT but not sure.

In our leisure time we do want to be much more outdoors than the UK allows so bike riding, walking, running, tennis. We hope to have a good circle of friends and socialise with other young couples. My parter would probably like to join a football club or something similar. And of course barbies, relaxing with friends etc.

From what you said it sounds like Perth could be the place as we definately want the climate but dont want to be short of things to do or struggle to find work.

Thanks for your response

Hi Emma

there's a private hosp 10 mins away. i know they do botox/plastic surgery there. Murdoch also has a private hosp - its approx 20-25mins drive from here, plus they're building a huge public hosp adjacent.

football - i assume soccer/roundball game. footy here is aussie rules - you may need to focus more on the "pom" suburbs...the nice bit is that everyone can wear all their different uk club tops and it provides a talking point rather than an argument !.

will do.

you should also consider NOR (=north of the river); places around Joondalup, Ellenbrook, Burns Beach, Butler. i'm sure plenty of others can let you know the pommy enclaves; i'm assuming you'll rent initially - so you can suss out what you want with many of your locals able to help woth settling in, cos they've done it !
