Hi all,

Having real difficulty deciding on an area to live. Looked at loads of suburbs both north and south and really am non the wiser. :mad: Our criteria are;

-Must be less than 25k from city or a 20 min commute (will be working at Royal Perth Hospital

-Want to rent nice 4 x2 for $350-400

-Coastal or inland not fussy but prefer quiet spot

-Prefer established suburb with local amenities ie shops park etc

-Close to rail link would be a bonus

-No more than 10 min drive to beach

-Need to have good schools nearby (have 11 yr old and 2 yr old)

From my research it looks like property south of the river is on the whole a bit cheaper, is this right? I like the look of places like Butler and Clarkson (NOR) also Safety Bay, Waikiki (SOR) but they seem a bit too far out and don't want to spend longer than necessary commuting. Hoping to be able to buy one car and for me to get the train to work if possible.

Any input/advice will be gratefully received, many thanks in advance Fiona x:)

You'll probably have a bit more of a 20 min communte to work if you live in safety bay and butler is about 27km+ from the city. i've not been to the northern suburbs to look at property, as my job offer was in Armadale. Like you I didn't want a long commute especially as initially I had to work shifts including lates (11pm finish) and night duty. Have you looked at http://www.aussiemove.com you can look at the map and have a sence of where everything is e.g. beach/city. For reference, my suburb Leeming is about 20 mins to the beaches at Freo.

Is your research internet research or have you been here? if you haven't been here yet I would suggest you find a short term (holiday let) or similar and have a good look around. Everyone has different ideas, we chose a longer commute to be in a place we felt more at home in. Generally the nearer you get to the city the dearer the rent, bearing in mind your other criteria, you want somewhere decent for your children. Another reason for finding a short term let is it is not a particularly easy process renting over here, it takes longer than you think. We ended up in a caravan!!

Rentals are much easier to come by down south. I like the Safety Bay area you have mentioned, there is Warnboro station not far and the freeway not far, either way probably around 45mins – 1hr commute.

Hi fiona

we are looking at victoria park.It seems to be a nice well established area the rent doesn,t seem overly expensive, and it was an area recomended by my husbands future company. I think it,s about 5km from the city and there is a rail line really close. We looked at coastal suburbs to start with but our concerns were how long it would take my husband to commute. With the stress involved in starting a new job we think it,s best to be quite close to his office without additional pressures.I haven,t really looked at the schools as milly is only 3 and will need to find her a nursery.

Hope this might help.Good luck.

Hi Fiona

Waikiki/Safety Bay are nice areas. There is a train station in Rockingham and Warnbro. It takes 35 mins on the train from Rockingham into Perth, and the trains are at least every 10 mins (You'd then get one of many buses out to East Perth - I think that's where Royal Perth is). The commute into Perth on the train is good, as it's new and clean. But some of the later trains are v.busy. (Transperth has all the details for all public transport which might help)

Rent and house prices are more affordable around the Rockingham area too

hope that helps

Fiona, are you going to be working shifts? It's something to consider when you're thinking of your initial base. When I first started on the ward here at Armadale, the late shift didn't finish until 11pm - the night shift didn't start until 10.45 (although that's changed now). You'll need to think about the travelling time involved if you're finishing late or coming home off nights.

Hi Ali,

Do you know what the shift times are in general for Aussie hospitals? I think we've decided to concentrate on the craigie, beldon, connoly, wanneroo suburbs as they seem to be relatively close to the beach, have local amenities and be quite affordable. I estimate a 20-30 min commute (bearing in mind most nurses do not travel in rush hour) Thanks for your help Fiona x

I think Armadale was one of the only places that worked that late - although that was only in MH the general side seemed to finish at about 9 or 9.30pm. I'm not sure of the shifts but I would imagine about a 7am 7.30 start until about 3.30 or 4pm and about a 1pm til 9.30 - but that really is only a guess.
