Guest guest1228
Hi all, Can anyone give me their view on how much it costs to furnish a house from scratch? We plan to sell all of our things in the UK and start again in Oz. We can't afford to ship as the cheapest quote I've had is about £3000. I have done a detailed inventory and by my calculations we could get everything we need for about £2000-2500. Bearing in mind this is buying the cheapest of everything mainly from Ikea. Most of our old stuff is hardly worth shipping anyway! Am I being naive or can it be done on a tight budget. I hope my calculations are right. I will be starting a new job 2 weeks after arriving so we will have regular funds straight away for everyday living and we will only have about £2500 cash to start up with. (Not including money for new cars) We have no problem buying 2nd hand as thats what we tend to do here for some things anyway (helps the environment, recycling lol) and we are active on the freecycling site. Any opinions gratefully received as I've been worried by other posts I've read on Poms in Oz. I think maybe lots of people must have a lot more items of value in their homes? I am used to buying on a budget so am hoping it will be ok? Also worried about the mammoth task of selling everything here. PLEASE ADVISE!! Guest vickilb77
Hi Fiona Me and oh not yet in Perth so i cant tell you exactly what things cost but we did have a look online at some furniture stores etc.. and we added up what needed to furnish a house and it came to about $10000, so we decided to just sell everything and buy when we get there im sure it will be much more fun doing all that shopping rather than paying for all our stuff to be put in a big old dirty container and worry when it will get to oz and will anything get broken and of course have to pay the best part of £5000 no definatly much more exciting to start over!! ali
We brought most of our stuff with us, but still had to buy some new things here. In the UK all our bedroom furniture was built in, so even though the bedrooms have wardrobes, we had to buy drawers etc., for the kids bedrooms, plus a bed for my son. We used our old double bed for several months, then that went into the spare room for guests and we bought a 5 piece bedroom suite. We brought our washer and dryer but had to buy a fridge freezer, study furniture, patio furniture, bbq. The TV and leather sofas went into the formal lounge and we bought a new sofa and large TV for the family room. We've probably spent about $12,000 on those items (to give you an idea) The houses are so much bigger, room for room the house we're in now is bigger than our home in the UK. My dining table which only ever got extended at xmas and for parties is that way all the time now or it would look lost. There's Ikea, and for electrical there's the good guys and harvey normans, Furniture Bizarre isn't too bad either. You can get bedding from places like Tarket, K.Mart and Big W -there's always a sale. We got a decent 2nd hand car from John Hughes for $10,000 (Hyundai Accent), I think bringing stuff or not is really a personal choice, for us it was much cheaper to bring the things we had because they were of a good quality plus it was nice having some familar objects around us too. But if you're ready for replacing stuff anyway - I'd say have a spending spree when you get here. I'm sure there's still boxes in the garage that I haven't yet unpacked. Guest cazmayo
Hi guys, When we lived in Perth, we fitted out our apartment with white goods and furniture from CASH CONVERTERS, they are a second hand chain shop. It was brilliant. I remember buying a fridge and then selling it again 8 months later for the same amount!!! We also bought a washing machine (they are second hand, but they service all white goods before reselling) then my pride and joy was an ex-display suite of furniture, massively reduced. I dont know if they are still going, I would say so. Im hoping to return to Perth next year. Cheers Caz
Guest Julier320
Hi there, we moved over in August and had the same idea as you - get rid of everything and start again. There were things that we had to bring, memories, clothes etc, and we decided to bring our sofas and our bikes - cost us £1650 for about 30 cubic meters. Apart from that we pretty much got rid of everything!!! -- Wish I hadnt, for an extra £1500 I found out I could have brought the rest of my house, including all my cutlery, crockery bedding - anyway by then it was too late, the charity shops had already benefitted from my giveaways. We have however found some real bargains here to refurnish. Super Amart in Osbourne Park are/were doing a deal on 23 pieces of furniture for $3000. We also got a queen bed and 2 bedside cabinets for $435 and a king bed, dresser with mirror and 2 bedside cabinets for $2100 - all solid wood and really nice looking - check out their website http://www.superamart.com.au/home/store_landing_DB.asp As far as other goods are concerned, I drag my husband round to garage sales every weekend (much to his disgust!) but you can grab some real bargains there, got a top loader washing machine for $100 and loads of glasses and other stuff that we needed. I have to admit is has been fun trolling through other peoples rubbish. Good luck with your move - Julie:D
