Hello everybody,

I hope to be coming to Perth sometime in November 2012 with my wife and two kids aged 9 and 7 and was wondering if anybody on this forum is currently working on the Gorgon project and maybe they could give me a slight insight to the project or best places to live, schools or any advice at all.

Any information at all would be much appreciated.

All the best

Tim

Hi Tim, I too am hopefully moving over to Perth in the next couple of weeks with my family and going to work on Gorgon. From our research, the area that we are looking at depends on the schools and their catchment areas. Reviews on all schools can be varied so it makes it harder to decide. My two girls are 14 & 11 and would love to hear from anybody who can push us in the right direction.

Has anybody been hit with the delays on the the job as we were to move over in July. I hear that the lands have been handed over now but can anybody shed any light on this.

Cheers, Dan

Hi Dan,

My Kids are 9 and7 so a bit younger than yours, originally I was supposed to go out around the end of September but now they tell me it will be the end of November due to rosters etc.

Do you guys already have your visas? Are you going on a 457 or another way?

I'm in a similar situation to you as regards in trying to get as much help and information as possible, if I hear of anything that might be helpful to you I'll be sure to pass it on.

What are you going to be doing on the project?

Check out this site it's very useful http://www.aussiemove.com

Hi Tim,

I am a civil engineer. We have our visa through since June (457 ) and just waiting on confirmation of start date. There was a hold on the job, lands had to be signed off, but from what I hear now, that has been granted, also the logistics were not helping either. I had a call during the week and should be moving within the next 4-5 weeks. Looking forward to the move and to be part of the project.

If I hear any more I will pass it on to you and the best of luck with your move.

Regards Dan

I was hoping that you guys might be able to give me some contacts to send my CV out to. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

I am currently working as a section engineer/site manger in Scotland. It will be a bit of a shock moving from the winter over here to the summer over there!!!

Look forward to hearing from you guys.... Feel free to PM me the info if you don't want to post names/e-mail addresses on the main forum.

Hi my husband is working on the Gorgon Project.

It is running behind at the moment he has a 3 year contract and seems to think he will be there for at least an extra year. The facilites are great.

We live in Carine which is a lovely suburb. The surrounding suburbs are equally as nice. Gwelup, Karrinyup and Duncraig. Not to sure about Hammersley or Warwick though. We have a 14 year old and he has settled in really well. #TOUCH WOOD. Good luck with the move.

Hi Bigyin,

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for the information.

What does your husband do on the project and how does he enjoy the rosters and living on the camp?

I'm still waiting to hear when we can travel out.... Very frustrating :((

Hi Dan,

Well you must all be getting very excited now, soon be time to head off.

I still haven't heard about when or why or whatever.... It's becoming very frustrating but I guess I have to be patient.

You're going to be arriving in the middle of summer, I'm very interested in what your first impressions will be.

Good luck

Tim

Hi Tim,

The excitement has turned to frustration at this stage. We are still waiting on conformation of dates, in fact there has been no communication at all since my last post........I wonder if its the same company that we are both going to work for....Anyway, if I do hear anything in the next couple of days/weeks/months....I will let you know...

Hi Dan,

I'm sorry to hear that you're still waiting, it's very disheartening, I can only speak for myself now and it is so exciting, looking forward to it everyday and it just seems to be getting further away now...... The fact things are being delayed are not an issue, that can happen but communicate it then.... it's the not hearing anything that's the killer.... I'll be sure to let you know if I hear anything at all also.

Tim,

I feel exactly the same way, but the excitement only lasts for so long. The lack of communication is the killer, I do hear it is the Australian way........ Are you still looking at a Nov. move

Hi Dan,

This isn't a very nice feeling at all but I am slightly relieved to know that I'm not alone in this sort of situation.... I was talking to a friend and former colleague who has been in Perth since sometime in June who was telling me that the paperwork is ridiculous..... He was probably exaggerating but he seems to be under the impression that he has signed his signature approximately fifty times in the past couple of months..... Anyway Dan, lets remain positive! When we get out there I'll buy you a cold beer and we can look back on this and have a laugh!

By the way I sent you a personal message, it's by all accounts against forum policy to mention company names.

Keep the faith!

Tim

He's had theory skills assessed and will take his practical assessment at the end of the month!!! Problem being we cannot find a company for a sponsorship :(( any info appreciated if you know of companies requiring welders!!!

All failing that we shall apply for state sponsorship once he's has his third bash at the dreaded ilets exam:((( they are soooo holding up our application!!! :))))

Hi kayliandnathan,

It's all very difficult hey? I can remember when I first started looking for work/a job and sending so many letters of intent and my cv/resume and it was constantly falling on deaf ears, not having a visa doesn't help the situation either. I attended the EXPO in London thinking it was all going to be so easy..... I came away feeling very depressed.

The only advice I can give is to look at going through specialist recruitment agencies which you can easily find on the web..... The Gorgon project is attracting attention from all over the world for obvious reasons and so the larger companies working there are using recruiters to do the sourcing for them. If you can find a recruitment agency that is looking for skilled/qualified welders then you have a foot in the door.... if you can get in that way then it's half the battle..... And lets be honest, an agency will only make money from it if they find a placing for you so they are also going to do there best for you.

Good luck with exams and assessments.

Tim

Why the third go on the IELTS? Could you share some info on this? I'm very curious. Thanks

My hubby works off shore gas & oil . We live in Padbury and our 2 teenage boys go to St Stephens (private) lots of people question private or public school- really I would look at public school as its not easy as you think getting them into private, unless your Catholic ( which tends to be cheaper) private will set you back approx 7k+ a year per child depending on yr level. I work public school system and if you do your research and your kids have a stable family life all will be good.

There's a bit going on about overseas labour coming to work on our projects so that could be another thing adding to some delays? Not really up to speed on it all - sorry

Don't get disheartened by the wait as good things come to those that wait :-)

Areas to live, everyone has there choices and for you it's hards,

Prob best to do your own research on the social economics of suburbs, the housing - numbers of owned, rented & homes west ( government funded housing for low earners, refugee etc), the job situation n those areas, the school results web sites, though you can't always go by this.

Also rent for a few months in the area, I know we want to have it all settled and kids sorted but def would rent for a while.

You will be FIFO so consider That too- hope it helps :-)
