Guest gabifabri
Hi Everyone, I'm hoping someone out there can give me a bit of advice. We're moving out to Perth Feb/March '09 with our 2 year old daughter. We're looking to move to the Hillarys/Ocean Reef/Iluka area (we think... recce trip planned for Nov/Dec). But the whole catchment area thing is playing on our minds, so any info would be a great help. I'm trying to understand how the Aussie education system works compared to UK, and if I understand it correctly, kids start school about 1 year later than in UK. Am I right?? Also the Kindy and Pre-school years are non-compulsory, and not all schools provide them? So here come the questions!!!! Can anyone recommend a good private nursery or play group I can send my daughter to a couple of mornings/days a week that would lead nicely into Kindy? How does the primary admissions work? I would like her to go to a catholic primary if poss., does it work on parish boundaries like in the UK?? If anybody is in the same situation, would love to hear from you. Its all a bit daunting!!! Thanks for any help Gabi
Guest suzy+1
Hi, my daughter is 3 and a half and im still confused by the pre-school system here, but they definatly dont start school till 5 yrs in WA. There are a number of childcare centres but i would advise you to put your name down on waiting lists early as most places are in high demand. It took 6 months on 4 waiting lists before my daughter got a place-but that was temporarily full time and i think it should be easier if you are happy to put your daughter in for a day or 2 where ever they have a free spot. Thanks for any help Gabi Hi Gabi, We are moving to Perth in may 09. I have a 4yr & 2yr old, both girls. We haven't looked into the school system yet. I just thought, there are soooooo many brits moving out there every week, I'm sure the schools are used to us not knowing what to do. I have heard that 'yes' it is the best thing to do, to put their names down ASAP when you get there. It will give you abit of time to 'then' check out what where and how. Hope the move goes well! Do you already have any friends out there? It's sooooo exciting. Michelle x
Guest emmabarry
Hi there... Daunting is true but yes the schools do seem used to all us brits and are very understanding and helpful-thats been my experience any way.. We have been here in Perth almost 4 years-just getting on our feet now, we have 3 kids...9 1/2, 4 1/2 and almost 3.... Just get your name down asap I know where we live we had to provide proof of address for catchment reasons Good luck Emma

Guest zaramatty
Hi, we have been here for 6 months and I arrived without having a clue about the education system! Saying that my big boy is happily in pre-primary and I have found a 3 year old kindy which provides occasional educational care for my little boy. He loves it, called Buzy Kidz, Pacific Way, Beldon, just of Ocean Reef road it is $20 for a morning session and $16 for an afternoon, it is run by experienced people and is very like my experience of nursery, in the UK. There is a waiting list, but we got in within a few weeks! Good luck with the move, it will be okay when you get here and well worth while!
