JoanneandChris
Hi everyone, Just joined the forum today and this is my first thread! We arrive in Perth on 18th February. Can anyone give us advice on good areas to live please? My partner will be looking for work in the CBD. Ideally he would like to cycle to work (up to 10km). Alternatively, he would like to go on public transport but he would not like to commute more than half an hour. We are looking to rent for a year. We will have a 5 month old baby so we would like to live somewhere that I can easily walk to the shops. We love the outdoors so would also be looking for somewhere with parks nearby or somewhere close to the beach. We would also love a recommendation for a good estate agent that we can deal with whilst we are still in the UK. We are hoping to secure a place to rent before we get there. Any comments would be much appreciated. Thank you, Joanne
ali
There are so many suburbs that could meet your description - what's you're budget for rentals as this may rule in or out some suburbs for you. I live in Leeming which is about 14km from the city. The local train station is Murdoch some 10 mins walk (for me) and gets you into the CBD within 10 mins, we're 15 mins from Freo and about 17min from the beach. Leeming isn't every migrants cup of tea as it's an older but well established area, the schools enjoy good reputations. I'm not sure about rental prices, but think my friend pays about $500 for a 4x2 (it's not a cheap suburb) Surrounding areas also have good reputations. Oldham poms
Hi Joanne As Ali said you need to first work out your rental budget as suburbs vary massively on price. Rental market out here was our biggest hurdle. Its very competetive. As a general rule agents wont let you take a property without you attending the open day etc. We stayed in a holiday rental for 4 weeks when we arrived which gave us the time to look about (we arrived May this year). You may know about it already but www.realestate.com.au is a good house sight. We live north of the river so are about 10 mins from CBD by train and are 3 half minutes (in the car) from the beach (sad I know that we know how long it takes). If you have any questions let us all know as it can be a minefield especially when you have a baby to consider as well. Sharon
Sal
If budget isn't an issue then look at Subiaco, Jolimont, Dalglish. Nedlands you can cycle along the river every morning and go into King's Park - but very expensive.

JoanneandChris
Thanks Ali. We were thinking of a budget of $400 per week for a 2-3 bedroom house but after looking at some of the property sites, I am starting to wonder if this is an unrealistic budget. JoanneandChris
Thanks Sharon. Karrinyup looks like a nice area. We will contact some agents and see if they will rent us a property if we pay a larger deposit but if not, I guess we could rent a holiday renal for a while. ali
It doesn't sound as if you're ready to settle down yet, although there is a risk to your relationship if you go off and travel and expect your partner to just wait in the wings. You probably need to get things out of your system, if being in one place is making you depressed then you already have your answer.

kjlav
We too thought $400 would do it but no!! when you see what you get for that its not a great deal. Some were so dated and so unclean (why would you not clean before someone came to view??) Through word of mouth we got a brand new one for $475 so are very lucky. Hated viewing especially when another 6-8 or more families turn up to view too!! Cattle market comes to mind!
TDK43
The radio news said yesterday that the average rent in Perth is $450 per week, and that the availability of rentals has not eased even with the first home owners grant. Guest Helios
Hello, it is funny as I'm exactly on same case, workplace will be in CBD and I'm looking for something close by within cycling distance to work, ended-up focusing on suburbs like Leederville, Subiaco, Jolimont & Wembley, I'm also on same budget but looking for a 2BR accommodation and there seem to be a couple of availabilities on these suburbs for 400-450$ a week.
