Pre Xmas arrival Mandurah

Hi, moving to Mandurah just before Xmas with husband and 2 elderley cats. Just wondering if there are any social events being organised we can tag along with? We are young at heart, both in our forties - no kids!

I am Jayne's husband. I have arranged for my bike to be transported with our possessions in a shipping container. Plan is to arrive in December with container arriving in January. I have a Suzuki DL 1000 V Strom. I have applied for the import permit which is due any day - hopefully. The quote a 15 working day turnaround. Apparently it needs to be spotless for quarantine checks and it will cost a bit in fees etc. Varying comments on web about the process ranging from ok to a complete nightmare! Then some more things to sort out for road worthiness test and registration.

Hi, my name is Rosie and myself and my husband are considering moving to Mandurah before Xmas as well! We live in Booragon in Perth at the moment and are torn between Burswood and Mandurah. Want an apartment as just the two of us. I was wondering what made you settle on Mandurah?

Thanks, Rosie

Hi James looks like we'll be arriving early December! We are finalising all our arrangements at the moment and you've been through it so you know how crazy it gets. I think we'll be like zombies for the first couple of weeks when we arrive!

Hi Rosie, we chose Mandurah for our initial move for practical reasons. it has good road links for my husband's job, mainly. Also we wanted to be on the coast and we liked the feel of it when we stayed there on a holiday earlier this year. We didn't want to be too Urban but we like being close enough to go to Perth if we want! What about you? Why are you moving and what are the pros and cons of Burswood v Mandurah? Your priorities might be different from mine and we definitely will look into things more closely before we buy?

How long have you been living in WA? Are you settling in ok?

Hi Jayne, We have been here a year now. I'm afraid for most of that year I have been hankering after England as my husband works away for two weeks at a time and I have not made any friends, although I do have gym buddies! We took on a rental house in Booragoon near Applecross. It's a very nice suberb but that's the problem, it's very like where we live in England only without the friends! We have decided that as we are only intending to stay in Australia for another three years we might as well experience something different I.e. Mandurah as we would not be living in an apartment overlooking canals in England! The part of Burswood we like is mostly apartments with fantastic river and city views, again something we wouldn't do in England. The value for money is amazing in Mandurah. Same sort of apartment in Burswood is twice the cost. Now I have found this site maybe I will meet some people and not feel so homesick! Up to now the only good thing about Australia is the weather and Coles Anzac biscuits lol! Don't mean to sound bitter, just spent the winter here in a freezing cold house as they don't have double glazing or central heating here and they do need it as it gets to 1 degree some nights! When you buy make sure the house has reverse cycle aircon which heats as well as cools. We have ducted evaporative which is useless over 35 degrees which it often is in the Summer. Best of luck with everything, maybe we could meet up if I end up in Mandurah Rosie

Hi Rosie

if you are looking for apartments you will have your pick in Mandurah, there seems to be an oversupply of smart new apartments. We don't know if we will settle there it depends on our trial run. Sorry to hear you are lonely, I couldn't do the Fifo thing at all. You must have times where you feel really isolated. Our move is about getting more work/life balance not less. We are not happy in England at all and we already live away from family and friends anyway. This year there has been very little or no summer and we've barely switched the central heating off! Thanks for the tip about air con though I'll definitely bare that in mind. There is no going back for us, we have sold up and we are moving permanently without question. We have lived abroad before in a couple of different countries and also moved around the UK so we are not that daunted, after all if life was so great we wouldn't be doing this in the first place! Have you got any hobbies or interests that you could use to join clubs in order to meet people and socialise cos that's what we are hoping to do?

Cheers Jayne
