Shipping -- our experience

Hi

Our stuff arrived on Thursday, so that's 10 weeks door-to-door (Scotland to NOR). Arrived in Fremantle the previous Wednesday and we received a phonecall the following Tuesday to say it had cleared customs and it'd be delivered on Thursday.

We were delighted to have out stuff eventually. Amazing how awkward things are without the familiar items: kitchen utensils; pots and pans; the Dyson; our comfy bed; large wine glasses.

We used Doree Bonner and aside from what I will call a few 'miscommunications' they did the job. Had a few breakages: my sons cot, my desk, a bowl, a huge mirror and a china horse ornament (I think my wife broke that tho, as she always hated it). After checking the excess on my Letton Percival insurance (£250), I repaired the desk and cot and will just buy another mirror. So on the whole, not too bad.

Can't believe how many boxes arrived at this side, we should have dumped more stuff before it was shipped, but we thought we'd make full use of the 20ft container. The house was littered with boxes and I was hoping we were nearly done when the guy said "that's us down to the last 10 metres". House still has a lot of boxes sitting around.

Annoyingly as we are renting, we can't put up any pictures (without permission) and we have loads, so they will have to stay packaged until we get somewhere permanent.

Nothing appeared to have been touched by Customs -- not the half full bottle of whisky which was accidentally packed (unless it was full when it was packed) or the rattan lamps. Things we shouldn't have brought were the SKY HD box and our snow shovel (accidentally packed).

I'm a regular at Bunnings these days -- if you need plugs, don't bother I've bought them all. Every time I change a plug I expect the appliance to explode, but we seem OK at the moment. Fridge, washing machine, Dyson, Telly all currently working.

Think that's about it, if anyone is moving back and wants to buy a SKY HD box or snow shovel (you can have that free) give me a shout ;-)

Cheers

Ross

Thanks Ross for that reminder too! We had the same mentality as you and brought everything as we had our own container (heard horror stories of shared containers so didn't want to go there) and when I unpacked this end, there was the borrowed kettle, mugs and cutlery still on a tray borrowed from my neighbour - borrowed so the packers could make coffee/tea whilst packing! Also packed was a used dishcloth and dirty teatowel (both of whom had been destined for the bin after the removalists had gone!) and a dustpan and brush complete with soil, leaves and rubbish in it! Interestingly, AQIS had disposed of some lavendar bags put in the bed linen to keep it fresh, but had allowed the good old West Sussex dirt and leaves in!

Hope you are enjoying life in Perth and don't worry, we have all done the "living with boxes" thing for a while. It took us months to unpack and finally sort out what we really didn't want from what we had brought with us, but when we did, we went to a "Swap Meet" - "Car Boot Sale" for a couple of weekends and got rid of most of it and it then funded a really swish barbeque.

Hi,

We are heading to Perth around Feb/March 2013 and so far had a quotation from Crown for shipping our belongings. As we intend to sell off a lot of items they advised us that a shared container would suffice.

Having read the comment by Rossmoyne I was curious to see what other members experience have been with a shared container?

Also we have been quoted around 3-3.5k for the service, is this roughly what other people have paid?

Thanks

djj

I paid just under 4k for a 20ft sole use container.

In 1991 when I came I paid just under GBP3K for packing, insurance, 20ftcontainer, customs clearance, delivery and unpacking at new house..... We used Abels and couldnt fault them in UK, but Kent were the company in WA and they were a friggin nightmare and would never ever recommend them in a month of Sundays! Mind you that was 21 years ago and I would like to think they had improved since then!

Great reminder . Well in my experienced it goes well. I knew one company that are very experienced in sending their possessions to Perth, whether its a single bag or a full container for a large home. They arrange transport by both airfreight and sea. Also they offer competitive rates for a fast and ever friendly shipping to Perth service...

I feel an advert coming on...
