Hello!

Me and my boyfriend are planning to move to perth asap on a working holiday visa. We currently live in the philippines working here as scuba diving instructors. I have work in tourism and hospitality for the last few years and before that i worked in many different bars and restaurants in america and england. My boyfriend is a british electrician.

As we have been travelling for the last few years we have very little money. ( i have like £200 and he has about £3000!!! GRRIIMM!) we have been told by so many people we have met, including many of our diving guests from perth that if we went there we could make a killing.

we really want to relocate asap, we are looking into beginning of march 2013....

so what i was wondering is is this completely unrealistic?? if the streets are paved of gold in perth why isnt everyone trying to get there? Will we even be able to get visas with my non existent bank balance? how much can we be expecting to pay to get set us (downpayments on a flat, a car, basic living costs). how long until we can get jobs. We have been told we can get one with the click of our fingers but with more research online my boyfrind would have a LOT of money to spend to be legal to work as an electrician in oz. i have heard things about tax numbers, bank accounts etc needed before working.. is this quite straightofrward or could it delay us earning.

is there any point to going if we are broke? i know we are only allowed a 1yr working holiday visa so would we forever be playing catch up with bills if we go there with no savings, or woould we be able to have fun and do a bit of travelling with what we could potentially earn?

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

thank you thank you thank you!!!

Hi, was just browsing at new posts and came across yours, i'm a permanent resident in perth but i originally came over on a holiday working visa two years ago from england. the cost of my one year holiday work visa was 250 british pounds, but i had to have atleast 2500 pounds in my account to prove that i could support myself on my travels. I had to have a printed bank statement to show i had the funds in my account, they did not check at the airport and i have heard quite a few people say they don't check but it's always best to make sure just incase!

since being here i have found that perth is either one of them places, you either love it or hate it and alot of people just can't take to it.. people also see it as quite an isolated country and everything is quite far away from eachother unlike in england id walk ten minutes away to get to a shopping centre, i now travel half an hour by car to get in to the city but i guess that's just where in perth you decide to live, i wanted to be close to my partners family who don't live near the city. the money however is really good and i've found that the people here are really laid back and friendly. if you go on this website http://www.gumtree.com.au you can find jobs on there and prices of houses/rooms to rent and the prices that they cost..

personally when i came over i stayed at my partners parents house for two months by then i had saved up enough money to start renting and have abit of savings, i got in to a job one week after being here, there are plenty of jobs out here which is also a positive. i would still recommend having some money behind you if you have no relatives to stay with but like i said, there are cheap houses and people renting rooms out if you look on that gumtree website.

good luck :)

Myself and my partner who is from the Philippines are currently in Perth, we have been here almost a year and came on a WHV from the UK and recently applied for PR through his company and I shall be de-facto. One thing I would point out which I'm sure is pretty obvious is that the Perth is extremely expensive compacted to the Philippines,. I'm also quite sure that on a WHV you are supposed to have at least £5000 to be able to to prove you have enough funds to support yourself whilst travelling but don't quote me on this I am not 100% sure of the figure but that comes to mind, and as pinky89 has said above its unlikely you would be asked to show this evidence. As mentioned above gumtree is a good place to look for house shares as this would be the cheapest option and I would recommend seek.com.au for jobs. The salaries are enough to live on depending on work you do but on a WHV you are likely to only get temp work through an agency due to the 6 months work rule with anyone company.
