My husband is in the process of applying to the WA police, and if ssuccessful we would be looking to move out to Perth towards the end of the year. I am a RGN nurse with 16 years experience in iTU I am looking into getting my registration approved in WA but seem unable to find out what paper work I need . As far as I can work out as long as you can prove English education to secondary level (5 years) + and taught Nursing in UK and continued working in nursing. So any advice would be great xxx Hi Rachel, I'm a CNS (Clinical Nurse Specialist) in MH and sit on/convene interview panels. One of the reasons that UK applicants don't get shortlisted is that they often don't address the selection criteria. Often there is a seperate criteria and it's best to address each seperatly especially for CN jobs. It you don't then they have to find the information from your CV which often doesn't contain enough info to Demonstrate (the key work) your knowledge skill, as often the CV is a list of courses etc. An example of one of the selection criteria is : Demonstrates a knowledge of equal opportunity Act, Occupational Health and Safety Ac, Disability Services Act and legislation that impacts on nursing practice (you'd include the poisons act. Another (for MH) might be: Demonstrates a high level of communication, negotiation problem solving and interpersonal skills. It's best to write a couple of paragraph - for the legislation - what your understand it of each, for the communication - who do you communicate with - in what form, give an example of a scenario you've dealt with and what the outcome was. I have applied for several jobs online but heard nothing. I have been told not to worry as I will be able to secure a full time permanent position when I arrive in Australia. I have nearly 4 years experience in medical nursing prodominantely respiratory and diabetes. Do you agree or do you still think I will struggle to find employment? I am 43 years old and am a mental health nurse with 5 years experience in Older Peoples services. What are the first steps I need to take ???? Do I apply for a visa first? Register as an nurse for Australia? Apply for a job??? Is my kind of nursing jobs available? Is an Aged Care nurse what I will be known as in Australia? Is it possible to get sponsorship then get PR? My husband works in IT - senior helpdesk type work/troubleshooter - is this work available in Perth? Any information is gratefully received! ali Posted January 27, 2013 Report Share Posted January 27, 2013 Hi Lucy, I work in Mental Health and there are indeed jobs in older adult services, we have both in-patient and community older adult services where I work. Your first think it to decide what visa you want to come on - a temporary sponsored one (457) for which you won't need to do the skills assessment - but will need to find an employer, or a PR visa - The PR visa's and process have changed since I came over on one, so hopefully someone with more recent knowledge will be able to reply to that bit. You need to apply to AHPRA which can take several months to come through by all accounts - once you get your letter of eligability, you then have to present to the offices in person to activate your registration (this has to be done within 12 months of getting your letter). I would like to come on a sponsored visa but worry that when the time expires I might not be able to get a permanent visa. In your experience, have you found much difference between working in Australia and UK? And, I am just being nosy now, which do you prefer? Where are the main services for mental health for Older People situated? In main hospitals or specialised areas? Is there any scope for work life balance as a nurse in Australia - it would be nice to see my daughter sometimes! Anyway, thank you again for the quick reply... here's hoping I make it over soon!!! Lucy Hi Lucy, Patients are patients the world over and that's the good thing - services here though differ in that a lot are with the private sector/non government agencies. If you work for an employer for 2 years then there is a pathway to employer sponsored PR. I sometimes miss the structure of the NHS, but enjoy my job here, I'm a clinical nurse specialist (was a band 7 also in community in the UK), and whilst the responsibilities were much the same, I probably feel more relaxed here. I'll ask the manager (a Scot) of our Older adult service if you can get in touch with her (she might be on leave soon), so you can ask questions about Older adult nursing here in Aus. My boyfriend and i are lookign to immigrate to Perth, I have been researching emailing WA state board the ANMAC and also nurses@wago.co.uk Now obviously my main question is when can i start applying ... ANMAC Have said i can apply for registration after 3 months paid as a nurse. WA state board have said they are looking for 2 years Nurses@wago.co.uk have been the most helpful and have said i can: We are currently recruiting experienced nurses and midwives for a range of positions within the WA health services. The positions we are recruiting for that offer visa sponsorship require a minimum of 2 years’ experience. If you would like to go to Australia on a Working Holiday Visa (given you meet immigration requirements – refer to website below), you could register with our bank shift provider ‘Nursewest’ when you have 12 months experience. If you are planning on applying for your own visa through General Skilled Migration you need 12 months experience to do so. We employ into the government hospitals in Western Australia, other employers may have different requirements for experience needed. Now i was looking to go over on a PR skilled migration visa which states i need 12 months experience. now as WA are looking for two years if i start my application for registration and migration approx summer 2014 by the time it goes through i will of most likely achieved my two years experience? or does it not work like that ? also i wondered what i do in taking the first steps i know its going to be a year away but do i start gathering evidence now? i.e gcse sertificates for english language proficiency? ali Posted February 1, 2013 Report Share Posted February 1, 2013 You register with AHPRA not the ANMC here in Aus - you could do that once you qualify which means you then apply for a modified skills assessment to the ANMC. However, your letter of eligibility for AHPRA lasts I think 12 months, so in that time you have to present to the office in person to complete the registration (so it would mean a holiday). Secondly, registration is annually, so you'd be paying for something you're not using. You can gather certificates - check out how long the English proficiency results are valid for (you won't want them to expire), transcripts of training will be sent from your Uni directly to the governing body so you won't be albe to request those until your ready. We are currently awaiting state sponsorship as we plan to move to Perth. I either plan to work as a maternal child health nurse or go back in the acute sector. Do you know of any agencies in Perth which recruit paediatric nurses? Also I'm about to apply to aphra hw long s it taking to get registered? I don't know about general nursing, but really if you think about it - the patients and their illnesses will be similar it's just the processes that will be different. I can honestly say that it's been hard at times, due to differences in the way of nursing compared to UK, but I certainly can't see myself going back to working in UK and the NHS (my family is still in UK, but are following me next year). Reports from my husband over the last few months regarding what is happening in the NHS reinforces that decision! The hospital I'm working for is really pro-active and supportive of it's staff as far as I can see/so far experienced. Everyone has been really friendly and made me feel part of the team from day one. I loved my job in UK, although it was pretty stressful due to the working conditions/cutbacks implemented. But I was working with a great team. I did wonder at the time if I was doing the right thing, as I knew I was going ahead of my family and would be on my own for a while. I guess it says a lot about my job and the people I work with, as I don't think I would feel so settled as I do at present.
