Nurses Thread!

I thought I'd start this off as I have had a few enquiries from nurses lately! We could all help each other whether we are here already or are contemplating the move! I'm a registered nurse and have been here for 5 years. I work in a hospital on an acute medical ward! Introduce yourselves all you nurses out there!

Hi, I am a nurse in Britain but my skills assessment was sent off last week! Yippee! The process has started. What's it like working as a nurse in Australia? I currently work in a community job however would consider going back the wards once we arrive in oz. I used to be a medical nurse. Our plan is to get visa through me, then hubby to try and get work as an electrician. Then once we are settled nd kiddies settled I would start work. I can't wait to get visa validated as was hoping to try and arrange a look around a hospital to see how things run. Do you think that's a good idea?

any replies greatly appreciated.xxxxx

Hi guys, I am in the process of getting all of my documents together for my application to AHPRA...I am getting fed up with waiting and I am really looking forward to moving to Oz (my partner and son are too :jiggy:) I also work in the community but i have never worked in a hospital as a staff nurse but I have as a student and an auxiliary...I love community nursing and one question I wondered is that when i do a job search it seems that community nursing in Oz links children and maternity a lot... I don't have those skills and wondered if community nursing in Oz is similar to the UK and if anyone is a community nurse in Oz that could enlighten me... Thanks :smile2:

Hi thank you for reply, we are going for either the 189 or 190. Although we are now considering not going for the state sponsorship as we have enough points without. However we keep hearing mixed reviews about job opportunities for electricians in WA. So we may keep our options open for job applications for my husband. We really want to find work for him as it is due to lack of construction jobs in Britain which has pushed us to take the plunge! :cute:

Hi everyone.

I am also a medical nurse with nearly 4 years experience. We are a family of 4 (2 boys 15 & 10) that have visa and flights booked for early May

Mad cow, can you advise what the employment prospects are for me please. I have applied for several posts but never heard back. I have been offered casual work but being honest I would much prefer a permanent post.

Thanks for any advice x

I'm a clinical nurse specialist in community MH here in Aus - I was a Grade G/band 7 in a Crisis Resolution service in the UK. Process and service delivery is a little different due to a lot of things being sourced with non-government agencies, psychology for example is mainly in the private sector although we do offer some in-house psycholdgy.

My guess is that when you are on Australian soil then you won't have a problem! Which area are you moving to?

Hi, I am a Community Nurse in UK. Have been a Community Nurse since September 2012. Prior to this I worked at Ramsay Health Care in Yorkshire, UK as a surgical nurse for two years. My sister lives in Ellenbrook, near Perth. We visited as a family in October for three weeks and really enjoyed it and our three children loved it. I am currently awaiting my IELTS from 2nd February. I sat my IELTS and got 7.5, 7.5, 7 and 9 (Academic). This is fine for the ANMAC but not fine for my points as I need to score 8 in each category. I went back to sit general ielts and found this so much easier and felt much more confident so here is hoping. My husband is a train driver and spoke to somebody at WATCO rail and it seems hopeful for him too. It is an awful wait for results. They are not even online yet!!!! It is awful when that is all you are waiting for.

Hi. Yes they do, you are right. I sat the academic paper on 15th December 2012 and got 7.5, 7.5, 7 and 9 which was fine to send off to ANMAC. It is ANMAC who need 7s in each category. I then emailed a migration expert and looked on a couple of forums who replied that as I have got the results for ANMAC I can now sit the general paper to get the 8s in each section which I did. The general paper which I am hoping to get 8s will enable me to get 20 points for for the 189 visa which i need. The migration person said to submit academic paper results to ANMAC and then submit general paper results to the DIAC when applying as they are two separate things. Hope that explains things a bit better.

Hi Madcow. We have rented a short term furnished rental in Waikiki, however we are quite open minded as to where we will settle. I suppose its were suits us best x

Hi again, that's SOR isn't it? Don't know much about the hospitals down there tbh. There is the big new Fiona Stanley hospital opening 2014 I think? That's SOR.

Hi Edzi, ok I see, that makes it clearer thanks. The ILETS is alien to me as we came here before that started! Thank goodness lol! I'm sure you will have passed with flying colours? Let us know how you got on.

Hi all!

My family and I are hoping to emigrate to Perth in around 18 months time (we are at the very early stages and super excited!).

I've been qualified as a nurse since 2003 and worked in theatres as an anaesthetic nurse in a busy acute hospital here in England since 2008. I would love to stay in anaesthetics. From what I can gather, in Australia there are anaesthetic technicians, probably similar to the ODP role here??? Does anyone know if I would be able to continue my role as an anaesthetic nurse in oz? Thanks x

Hi Caroline, don't know much about theatres at all but I'll try to find a link for your question.
