Electrician & Social Work Jobs

Hi,

Myself and my partner are looking to move to Perth but we are worried about finding employment. We have heard that both electricians and social work jobs are in high demand but not sure where to look for work. We are applying for a state sponsorship visa and looking for work in the meantime and just wanted to know if it is likely that employers recruit people from overseas. Also where is the best place to search for work?

Any help and advice is much appreciated!

It's mental health social work that I specialised in. I may have better look searching/applying for support work jobs as I only have a years post qualifying experience.

Don't no if you have looked into this very much as it doesn't sound like it. To work as an electrician in oz you will have to retrain you might get some work as a electricians mate while you train but training can be upto a year at collage this can be done at night school but its expensive so check it out.also to work as a social worker you need 3 years post qualified experience because the English degree is only 3 years and the Australian degree is 4 years so you won't get any work as a social worker unless you do the 4th year at university in Australia which the last time i checked was 20,000 dollars. I don't mean to burst your bubble but my wife and i have been thought the same thing. If you are unsure of any thing i have said p m me and i can give you all the info i no.

re Electrician, I understood it that if you go through Vetassess and have gained the relevant exams in the UK and you pass the Vettasses practical exam, you can go and work in Oz as supervised, do a 2 week course, pass it then apply for your A grade license. I am currently going through the route myself?

tell me if I'm wrong! Thanks

We have been told different things. We got told off one advisor that my partner would need to do another course in the UK which would cost approx $2000 and would take a couple of months to complete. However, then we got told he would just need to complete a skills assessment as he has 10 years experience. Not sure which one is correct though. We are going to email the TRA to find out and will keep you updated!

That used to be the case until last year. You now have to apply for restricted licence and then do Gap training for up to a year to gain your A licence. WA has brought itself inline with the other states..... There are a few guys on here doing it at moment and my OH will be doing that when we fly out in 7 weeks. Am currently waiting on his restricted licence just to get him on the waiting list for the course!!

What's the chances of a company wanting somebody that has to be supervised and how much do they pay? It's starting to be a bit of a nightmare....I have ran my own successful electrical contracting business for 8 years, been a spark for 16 years!

i have friends over there working at the minute, they don't think much of the standard of work by the Ozzies and they want us to jp through hoops....got a feeling that it's a money making scam!!!

I am one of the first batch of sparks on the new system and will be sitting my aussie trade test soon lol!. I had run my own company in the UK employing 12 staff and am very well qualified and struggled to get a job here when i arrived due to the licensing system. They say it can take up to a year but the logbook is time based and has took me around 7-8 months to complete and i avg around 50 odd hours a week. Then you have to book in the test and wait for your license after you pass. You will also have to do a comms test which gives you a comms license to get your A grade too. So basically it will take me almost a year so if i worked 38 hrs a week it would have been longer!

You will also have to do homework that has to be submitted and passed at 100%

I know the feeling Chris68nufc, my partner is having trouble trying to make sense of it all and its proving hard searching for employment via job searches on the net.

Loulou - what does the restricted license entail? What do you have to do to gain that? Is that going through a skills assessment with the TRA.

Me and my partner were going to go through immigration advisory services to do all this for us as its so complicated but they charge a couple of grand. I haven't heard back from the TRA yet, but once I have, I will copy the email onto here. Thanks

Hi there

you can apply for a restricted licence once you have bee assesed by Vetasses for migration purposes . My OH is main visa applicant so had to have his skills assessed first then visa app and then next stage of applying for restricted licence to get in the course for gap training once we arrive in Perth....
