Mount Lawley - What's it like??

Hello, we have been in Perth for just over 5 weeks now and we are currently living SOR with friends in Waikiki. We have been house hunting and we put in an application to rent a townhouse in Mount Lawley - which has been accepted....yay!

We have done our research of the area and we like what we have read. I was wondering if there is anyone out there that knows Mount Lawley and would like to share their thoughts and experiences of the area - hopefully it will confirm what we have read?

Thanks in advance,

Alan

Nice pubs and restaurants. The Astor has a lot of small bands on, and comedy shows (last years comedy festival was there). Sign up to their spam email.

Traffic is bad up Beauford St as it's the main drag into the city, but the train line is 5mins from Perth.

Head to Morley for big Coles/Woollies as well as a market and other main shops (Myer etc.).

I live just up the road, and really like living in the area.

Because it's an old area, it's well established. But houses tend to be expensive and sub-divided blocks are common.

Thanks for the info Bibbs - we are moving to a townhouse near Mount Lawley station so from a traffic perspective Beauford Street won't cause us too many issues to start with!

Do you know if the Good Life Gym in Mount Lawley is any good? I'll need to get one organised once we move

Ive known a few people who live there, seems nice enough with the cafe strip and nice shops etc .

Get good home contents insurance as i know home invasions have been on the up there recently, i know 3 people who have been burgled while at work in recent months but being close to the city and in a wealthy area this is par for the course really.

Goodlife gym is ok, depends if you want a real gym or a fitness first type place?

Indeed it is, home invasion is when they break in and while you are there and normally associated with violence.

Yep just wanted clarification in case Hels had not put enough of the wind up the original poster....... I thought, even it is true, what a thing to highlight. Worry new folk who have just arrived here by saying something like that. Anyone could rent, in any area and be unlucky in terms of break in's, but to mention home invasions which when reported seem to be very distressing, usually violent as you say and can result in property damage just seemed a wee bit over the top. Home invasions are usually linked to wider issues and in many cases are drug related.

So Alant don't worry. Mount Lawley is a great location and sure you will enjoy your new rental.

Thanks for all the feedback and info - we think we have made a good choice! Home invasions, burglaries etc can happen anywhere (good or bad area) - we are from west central Scotland (Wishaw for those that know it) so we don't scare or shock as easily as others :biglaugh:

Just to back up what Straightothepoint posted....I am an insurance assessor, so I get to deal with burglaries all the time and know the 'hot' spots for them. Mount Lawley is a very nice, safe neighbourhood, which has a lower than average burglary rate. Also, aggravated burglary, ie when the homeowner is at home, does occur in all suburbs, but in five years of doing my job here I have dealt with less than ten such incidences escalating into violence. From memory, almost all of them were drug-related incidents, where the person breaking in was doing so to collect an outstanding debt for unpaid-for 'merchandise'.

Enjoy Mt Lawley, and make sure you have a pint or two in the Queens or the Inglewood just up Beaufort St

I am an east coaster so a bit of a softie

We all have our crosses to bear

East coast is a nice part of the country - beautiful and stunning coastline! We probably didn't see as much of it and as often as we would have liked while we were living back in Scotland!

Thanks for the reassurance Pommiemike - its appreciated!

I'm more than happy to try a pint (or two) in pubs that come recommended - I'll be giving the two above a try. Someone from work mentioned the Queens so it can't be too bad! What about the Flying Scotsman? I hear they do a pizza and a pint for $10 on a Sunday....2 of the things in life I enjoy

I only went to the Flying Scotsman once, on a Friday night; the crowd was pretty studenty, which is fine if you are half my age :-/ So I tended to stick to the Queens and Inglewood. They both do outstanding food and a good selection of beers, and there is a decent curry house next to the Queens, called Two Fat Indians. When I live in Mt Lawley it was way too easy to fall out of one and into the other :-) For breakfast, I can highly recommend Coode St Cafe, which from memory is located between Third and Fourth Avenues on Coode St (obviously).

If you have a dog, there used to be a really friendly group of dog owners exercised their pets around 5.30pm every night on the oval towards the bottom of Central Ave. I met some very cool people that way, and even got my next house rental via them.

Mt Lawley is a great suburb with a buzz about it. Fantastic Mexican on Beaufort St worth trying.

Thanks for the recommendation....keep the food and bar recommendations coming!

My wife and I are partial to Italian and Asian food....any good spots in Mount Lawley??
