Arash
Dear friends, My name is Arash, 32 years old, I am planning to migrate to regional areas of Western Australia. I currently got my PhD in Plant Biotechnology and looking for Post Doc in regional areas. My masters is in Agriculture and have 7 years experience as an Agricultural Adviser (Consultant). So could you please advice me in which regional area I can find a suitable job related to my area of expertise either Post Doc in regional universities or Agricultural Adviser? Highly appreciated. Guest guest10912
Do you have a visa? Assuming you do, have you tried googling for jobs? I am not sure we have that many people on here who would be familiar with agricultural post doc positions...
Arash
Dear Rupert, Thanks a lot for your reply. I googled a lot but still do not know where to stay to find a job. I have WA regional sponsored visa (subclass 489) but the problem is where to land? Even if I'm not able to get a post doc position, still finding an Agricultural related jobs like Agr Adviser in an specific area in WA is difficult. Could you please tell me which regional areas of WA are suitable for me to have higher chances of getting Agricultural related job? So many thanks,
elizabethkolo
Try anywhere in the Wheatbelt, mate. That's all I've got. Narrogin, Wagin, Northam, Gingin, Merredin, Toodyay, Chittering. I know there's an ag school in Cunderdin (I had a friend who taught there). Good luck.
elizabethkolo
But if you're looking for a base, just go to Perth. All of the places I mentioned are day-trip distance from Perth.
ozee
He's not allowed to live or work in Perth with 489 visa. That's why it's called regional visa
elizabethkolo
Argh clearly the flu I've got is causing my head to spin! Cheers ozee. I'll try to refrain from more mindless posts on my sick day at home! Hopefully my regional suggestions made more sense :-)
Arash
Thank you elizabeth for the suggestions. Which one is a good place to live, having good facilities like hospital, school? You know, not a boring place. How are Mandurah or Albany in your opinion? Coz it is near to Perth. Thanks again.
elizabethkolo
Albany is a fantastic little city. It's big as far as regional areas are concerned, but it's definitely not an ag centre. It's not a 'boring' place by any means though. Someone else may be able to clarify what the go is in terms of whether Mandurah is considered regional or not for this visa. If Mandurah is considered to be regional, then this would be an ideal place to start, as its close to Perth and the Wheatbelt region. Arash
Yes, Mandurah is considered to be a regional place according to Aus immig dep. My intention is also Mandurah but still don't know if I can find Agr job there. Otherwise, if I know there are regional universities branch in somewhere then it will be fantastic to look for POST DOCTORAL positions in those universities. Do you have any info about regional universities Elizabeth? Appreciated.
elizabethkolo
I'm sorry but my knowledge about ag positions is really limited. I would say Mandurah is a good place to be if you plan to do a job search after you arrive in WA, using it almost as a base from which to search throughout regional WA. Regional university options are quite limited. I know Curtin has a Kalgoorlie campus, but I believe that's mostly engineering and mining. ECU has a campus near Bunbury (south of Mandurah) but I don't believe there are many ag opportunities there. Have you searched on seek.com.au yet? Arash
You are right, Mandurah can be a good place as a base to search for jobs. I have tried that but have not found anything yet. If I arrive in Mandurah, still won't be able to rent any house to stay permanently as WA gov will need my permanent living place. I don't know what will happen!! Really difficult. Arash
Hello Elizabeth, Among the following places, which one you think is a good place to live with good facilities and environment considering the same job opportunities (Mandurah, Bunbury, Northam, Denmark, Margaret river, Albany, Esperance)? Highly appreciated.
elizabethkolo
Hi Arash, what do you mean by 'same job opportunities'? Mandurah, Bunbury, or Albany are great places. All have the major amenities, like schools, hospitals, entertainment. Esperance is great, but it's WAY out there. Have you seen it on a map? Northam is a country town with not a lot going on unless you have a reason to be there. Denmark and Margs are just gorgeous places, but quite specialist in terms of employment opportunities. Arash
I mean if I have job offers from those places which one is better to choose? Just as an example. Okay, so you say Mandurah, Bunbury, and Albany are good places. In which one you think living costs are more affordable? and Is Albany's weather cool? I'm really fed up with Kuala Lumpur's humid and hot weather. So sorry Elizabeth, I'm questioning you a lot. Thank you very much.
