I haven't got a 14 year old - but when my daughter was 14 she pretty much had sleepovers, shopping, we allowed her to go into Perth on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon but some of her friends could not. She's just 17 now, and they still tend to go shopping, have sleepovers, they're doing dinner parties for each other at the moment (come dine with me lol), they all went bowling the yesterday and have had BBQ's on the beach.

thanks for getting back to me, I think thats great that they do stuff like that. Ive heard from a few other people that their kids dont socialise at the weekend and it got me a bit worried but I guess it depends on the child and how much they want to do these things. Although my 14 yr old doesnt like sport she is a bit of a social butterfly so Im guessing we wont have any issues. There just seems to be a good few teenagers unhappy in Australia from what I have heard but its all about the settling in period aswell. I do like the come dine with me thing!!

[h=6]So guys Im just wondering about what teenagers do in Perth. We are arriving next week and have a 14 yr old. In Canberra they tend to just go to the shopping centres or have sleepovers in each others houses. Are there anything like socials (disco's) for them to go to? Do many of you allow your teenagers to go to the beach with their friends? My 14yr old is not really the sporty type and refuses to participate in team sports. Any ideas? Oh Im sure you will like it and we are getting excited now aswell. The OH works in IT and is busy looking for work at the moment....

thanks Shandypants - to be honest I am more nervous and worried this time around that we will like Perth. I came to Canberra very blind (neither of us set foot in the place beforehand) and we were dying to get out of Ireland. There are no job opportunities for my husband in canberra which means he will never get a decent job which is one of the biggest things for us plus the fact that the weather is not great and there is VERY LITTLE to do. Canberra is a big country town and it is very solitary. Some people love it here but to be honest I really dont like it here and have been miserable for the last year. My 14 year old is not too hot on the place either and we are all very unhappy so thats why we want to move. When are you moving from the UK?

Hi Fiona - we are leaving on the 17th aswell but from Canberra. I remember feeling like that when I left ireland last year. I think Perth will be great though and Im more nervous about the schools and my 14 year old settling in. Where did you get your short term rental? We are initially staying in Nedlands because it is pretty central Is it just you and OH or have you got children? Suzanne

Im nervous and excited and Im really hoping that I love it because I just dont want to go back to Ireland either. We havent arrived yet but we will in about 6 weeks (not that im counting!! ) We are 35 and 36 and definitely interested in meeting new people. Hubbie is into footie aswell and we love wine . How are you finding Perth so far?

We havent moved to Perth but are in the next 6 weeks. We are Irish and currently living in Canberra (mid 30's ) We would be definitely be interested in a meetup when we arrive. My hubby was over in Perth a couple of weeks ago to do a reccie and he loved it. How are you finding it so far?

Well its about 6 weeks until we leave from Canberra to arrive in Perth and I have been doing alot of research on suburbs and schools etc. Ive noticed that alot of the private schools are REALLY expensive and we really cannot afford them barr a few. So I am sticking to the government schools for the moment and we are going to look both NOR and SOR. I have checked all the NAPLAN scores and used bettereducation.com.au to get my list of selected schools down to a few. However it would be good to get opinions of the schools as I know sometimes scores can be a little different to what actually happens on the ground. If anyone has their teenagers in the following schools it would be great to get your opinion of them and what they are like plus do they have a lot of Irish/ English expat kids in them. This is not overly important but I think it would help my 14 yr old daughter settle in. If there are any of these schools that you would NOT send your kids to please let me know. My daughter was in a private co-ed school in Canberra and I have to say it was awful - lots of bullying, poor education, no homework so we moved her to a private all girls and she seems to be getting on a bit better. Schools in Canberra are VERY hit and miss and there are very few govt schools that you would send your kids to. I was having a look at the scores and some of the public schools in Perth have better scores than the Private schools here in Canberra. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. We used Careline when we relocated from Dublin to Canberra. Because we didnt get a full 20 ft container it took them 4 months to ship our stuff across which was a pain. My friend also used them and her stuff came much quicker. Apart from the delay with the shipping everything was packed really well and we have no breakages and it was all in perfect condition. We got quotes from Crown aswell. Now we are relocating to Perth on April 17th and have to do it all over again

Hi Piccolo - I am from Dublin aswell and have been living in Canberra nearly a year but soon to be Perth. I dont know if you are in Oz yet but the "bogans" we get in Ireland are a little different. What I mean is that you will get a mixture of all different types of people in suburbs mainly. You'll know when you go to a suburb from the outside of a house what the general feel for the place is. Also go to houses you want to rent at different times of day to see what the general carry on is like. Take a look at this website and it will give you a general indication of house prices etc and suburbs http://www.aussiemove.com - seriously wait til you get there and dont rule anything out as yet. Im a Dub from the southside and would never live Northside - purely because everyone I knew swas on the southside. I think the North V South rule applies all over the world - each side always thinks it lives on the best side :)Suzanne

hello , welcome to the forum , we live in Baldivis and ticks quite a few of the box's you have mentioned .. there are quite a lot of areas that do though .

thanks Jackboots I will check that out - whats it like living 40k outside the CBD - is there enough to do for teenagers? We live 23k outside the CBD and it really is like living in the middle of the country side....and if anyone has any other suggestions I would really appreciate it

Hi Guys

 

I am new to the forum and wanted to introduce myself. Myself and the hubby and 13 yr old daughter are soon to be moving from Canberra to Perth. We have been in Canberra just short of a year and really want to move. Im just wondering if anyone has moved from Canberra (we are irish btw) and what they thought of Perth as a place to live in comparison to Canberra. My hubby is due to go over to Perth on a reccie in 3 weeks and then all of us will come to Perth within the next 12 weeks.

 

If anyone has any recommendations on interstate removal companies or short term accomodation that would be great. At the moment we dont know if we will live NOR or SOR once we get somewhere nice, less than 15 min drive from beaches, good high school, and an area that has good restaurants and a nice pub ( we dont have pubs in Canberra and all of the restaurants are either in Civic which is the CBD or 20 km from our house). We dont mind living 20 - 25k outside the CBD once there is good transport links (which we dont have at the moment).

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
