flatpack
I am expecting to receive some funds after we leave in August, I have spoken to the solicitor today and they said that they could only issue a cheque to me and only in sterling. This leaves me with having to keep open a bank account after we've left and a problem in getting the cheque paid in. If they posted it to me in Oz would I be able to deposit it into my Australian account relatively easily?
Julie
Hi, Yes you can, it takes around 6 weeks to clear and they will charge you around $15.
Julie
Just a thought, if I were you I would keep a bank account open in the UK, who knows what the future may bring, also if you go back for holidays you can telegraph funds back to use. Admin
Most of the big banks will do it. The process is explained on the nab site @ http://www.nab.com.au/personal/help-and-guidance/international-payments/overseas-bills-purchased and fees http://www.nab.com.au/personal/help-and-guidance/personal-banking-fees-and-charges#5g
Zena
Usually your solicitor can do a CHAPS payment direct to your bank, but this costs £14'ish. I also know from experience that they are reluctant to do this, but can if pushed.

I'd insist on a telegraphic transfer into my Sterling bank account and then you can arrange for it to be transferred to Aussie dollars at the best rate you can get. Sounds to me as if they are trying to make a bit of interest out of you whilst everyone waits for the cheque to clear!
