Relatives in UK - can they insure a car here

Hi All

 

My retired inlaws would like to start coming over for a few months each year, and tour around the place for a few weeks at a time, so are thinking of buying either a motorhome, or car and trailer tent which we would store at our house here. My question is, would thevehicles have to be registered and insured in our names, or could they be in their names with our address on the policies? I am reluctant to have more vehicles registered in our names, well insured anyway, because if anything was to happen when they are driving the motorhome or car, I presume it would affect our insurance on our own vehicles? We were thinking if they bought a relatively cheap car that they only use when they are here, we could just have it rego'd in our names, and they could top up the insurance in their name when they are out??

Has anyone any experience of this?

As you've had no replies perhaps no-one on the site can answer - why not ring a couple of insurers?

Registering a vehicle here in WA is linked to your WA drivers licence, no drivers licence, no rego, to get a WA drivers licence you need a medicare card, to get a medicare card you need a visa..........................need I continue.................

There is nothing stopping you registering the car in your name, but they insure it, you do not need to be the registered owner to insure it.

I don't think that is correct, you only need proof of identity and a WA address. There are more than a few people on temporary visas (who don't get a WA license) who own and register cars.

This is inaccurate. I have recently moved over from Sydney and bought a car. No problem changing the registration to my details. I still have my NSW license.

 

Now it is a drama trying to transfer that to a WA license. they want to see your citizenship certificate - no idea where my mine is. An Australian passport apparently isn't enough to prove that you are a citizen/resident for a WA driving license, Good enough for immigration though.
