Hey Ian, I'm no expert, only going by what I've heard but some domestic trades have arrived here thinking it's the land of plenty and had a bit of a shock. I know a plasterer who has had to retrain because he couldn't find work.

I believe the demand for tradey's is not in suburbia but working FIFO in the mines. Rio, FMG, BHP, just about all of the resource companies are expanding massively and there's huge demand for just about everything.

There are some specialist recruitment agencies around that just deal with trades/mines, I'm someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

Also bear in mind that it's thought around 70% of jobs never reach advert, it's all about networking here.

Good luck with the search and the move.

Hi Ian,

It is a worry! Im a Plumbing and heating engineer like yourself mate and after 4 years we can go whenever we like now and it looks like its not as busy out there as the goverment makes out. We are going for a month in march to have a good look round and was planning to go for good around aug or sept next year. Im hearing more negative that positive at the mo which i dont like, and the buisness is going great here at the mo! what a diliema. I didnt plan for this at all. Roll on March...I will report back and let you know.

Regards Dave

Cheers Dave, like you I have my own business ( last 10 years) and all of the negative stuff makes you think what your about to give up.

Unlike you I've never even been to oz before and wasn't planning on a reckie, ( can't really afford it, wages crap in devon).

I hope all goes to plan but as I'm applying for a 176 I can't go to anybother states ( i think)

Cheers all the best

Hi Mate,

We are only having a reckie round Perth, Not all over Oz. We have friends in Perth and dont really want to go anywhere else (although we have the 175 visa). Its only the Mrs who has been before im going blind like you mate.(Scary, Hence 10k on a reckie we cant really afford!!) As far as i can make out the work in Perth itself is a case of who you know not what you know. The main 'work' the goverment is on about is travelling away from city centre to the Mining areas. they are developing and growing these areas. You do a few weeks on and 1 or 2 weeks of and the dosh is well paid. Alot of people arent prepared to do that. Personally i am as im use to working away a bit so i would do it until things pick up in town i suppose. I think its gonna be tough any way you look at it. We just got to get out there and put ourselves about. Hard after 12 years of pleasing myself and running my own firm, but im up for it. New Adventure...Bring it on!!

I always fancied myself as Indianna Jones down the mines!! Take Care, Stay in touch! Dave

:biglaugh:

Hey guys, just want to help with a couple of points for your consideration.

I'd advise asking yourselves why you're coming? What do you want out of this move?

I can only speak from my own point of view and we earned an above average salary in London, had a nice house, two cars, ate out at least twice a week and went to the Seychelles on holiday every year. However, it felt like everything we did cost money, there was very little of any quality that cost nothing. My kids loved going to the park but they were all run down, public transport was shocking and expensive, it became more oppressive and less safe raising children in London.

Once we are settled here we will likely have a smaller house and I'm looking at buying a beaten up VW Beetle. We can't afford to eat out more than once a month at the moment, we struggle financially and can't conceive of a holiday right now but I am happier now than I have ever been. All of us are. It feels safe, it's clean, people are so friendly and helpful and we can have a great day out along the river on our bikes or take some food to the public BBQ's and it costs us nothing.

Financially we gave up a lot coming here but we are more wealthy here than we could ever have achieved in London.

The best of luck to you both but ask yourselves why you're coming and what's important to you. If either of you want me to do some local research for you and send some info back I'm happy to do so.

All the best guys.
