  1. Dyson thingy, electric heater or those 1960s style gas heaters. Anyone have a view on run cost, efficiency etc? We have a gas bayonet in one room but have been considering the electric heaters for 150 dollars. TIA!

    School stuff

All done today. It seems to be a mixture of store cupboard to share and individually assigned.

    School stuff

We have just come back from the trip to the newsagents with a hefty bill for our kids pens, pencils, hand sanitizer, kitchen roll! Etc. We have been told to label everything. Question is - do they take ALL ten pencils, 7 workbooks etc on first day. And do we have to label every flippin pencil? Or is the box enough? Gonna need an suv to take them to school with all of it [emoji2] TIA
  4. Hi, me and the missus (kids 7 and 5) have just rocked up in mindarie on monday. School sorted, tfn, job, shortlisted rentals ( fingers crossed). We would like to meet up with others in area. My wife wont be working so will likely be in more 'need' of some girl support during the school days. Any existing meet ups etc in place?
  5. I have been monitoring the market over the last year (we were choosing between Syd or Perth) and there were markedly lower posts in Perth each week, even compared to Brisbane. I did have fears as we preferred Perth but not much use if theres no work. I managed to secure a role albeit on less than I turned down in Syd, and a little below market rate. I was told to expect 2 months without work so to budget accordingly.

    Roku

Howdy. Im thinking of buying a Roku while still in UK as I hear you cant get them in Oz due to the already high quality tv there [emoji6] . I can then get it configd for iplayer etc and bang it in the suitcase. Anyone done this before?
  7. Cheers for the responses, Id heard the freeway was a bit chokka, I guess the main roads down are similar. I did wonder if the trains get rammed from a certain station down, in which case an extra 10 mins in a seat may be better! I will likely cycle to the station and leave the car with the wife.
  8. Hi, I have a job in Subiaco and my industry tends to be based round there, so even if I change jobs its likely Subi or CBD. I would like to know peoples view on the commute from 'far out' ☺ places like Mindarie or Tapping. My guess is the difference being the trip to the train station. In UK I either work from home or spend 2 and a half hours commute each way so both extremes really. I hear a lot about Joondalup being too far, but I've worked in London and Sydney and pretty much everywhere is at least an hour, so I know its subjective. TIA.
  9. Howdy, I keep seeing references to local school catchments on the descriptions of short term rentals. Is this a sneaky ploy to ensure a rental? Or can you actually try and secure a school place while you are there for a month, then move somewhere and keep the kids in the school?
  10. Trueblue - not uk based but made it incredibly simple process
  11. How does that 3 months thing for driving licence work? We have PR but visited in Feb to activate it but as we were in hotels for a week at a time didnt do any of that stuff.
  12. Hi, After missing out on a job, resigning ourselves to coming out in a few months etc - a job has come out of the blue for us. We now have just under a month to book containers etc. Does anyone have a checklist of 'stuff' to be done on arrival? Like driving licence transfer, medicare registration? I seem to be pretty aware of what to do to get out there but not so hot on arrival.
  13. I had a bit of it (expected as Im an only child and my dad passed 5 years ago) from my mum. She came out with us when we triggered our visas and nearly every day she would say "I can see why youre doing this" it really opened her eyes and although not happy about it, she certainly understands and accepts why we are giving it a go.
  14. We used trueblue and cant fault them. Responded to everything by the next day in detail. In fact it was likely us that held things up getting all my old references..
  15. Hi, I am being offered a fixed term contract (2 year) and on the face of it looks like a way for employers not to pay contractor rates, yet not have the financial issues as with permanent staff. What is the general trend with regards leave, super, healthcare, car etc? I appreciate each contract will be different and I may need legal assistance (please advise with any recommendations if possible). Experiences and views from people would be greatly appreciated.
  16. When we were there recently we were amazed at how much more profile gluten free is. Lots of options to have the gluten free version of a dish for a dollar or so more. That was also true in Sydney.
  17. We are coming out in early July for kids schooling and just before the airfares double. I thought the new tax year starting in July would be a factor but I spoke to loads of agencies and large IT companies about seasonality for my trade and they all said its steady aside from the usual easter and christmas / summer periods till late feb. It does depend on your trade though I guess.
  18. Just a shame to have the safety blanket taken away I guess. when we were there a few weeks back the expats we spoke to tended to have something in place in advance and raised eyebrows when we said we would likely come back regardless.
  19. I know no one will care but it looks like my job offer isnt going to happen, so we are booking our flights and coming out anyway. Hopefully fortune favours the brave, who dares wins and all that.
