Hi Yasmin I didnt stay in hostels, but I have loads of friends that did and crashed a few times at parties there. The Ocean View Backpackers in cottesloe is one of the best from what I've seen and heard, its only around $160/170 a week. Plus its right on the beach (literally), and plenty bars/transport etc in the area. I came to Perth in January this year on a WHV on my own and havent looked back Best of luck

Hi Nick I moved over to Perth 6 months today (time flys) on a WHV, having at the time recently graduated with a 2:1 BSc degree in Geology Earth Science, but much to my amusement the mining sector had taken a severe slump, and hasn't seemed to recover since. So I made the most of my time here and got another job in the hospo industry to keep me going, and just last month my employer offered me a promotion with state sponsorship (190). Being on a WHV gives you only 1 year in the country, and a restriction to working 6months at a time, although you can extend the visa by carrying out 'rural' work. I've decided to take the job and sponsorship as I love the lifestyle here in Perth, but it just goes to show that you have to make the best of the situations you end up in. Although sponsorship seems to be much harder to come by these days, there are companies still offering it. The way I see my situation is that when I finally get my 190visa fully processed, I can still continue to look for a job within my sector, only by that time I will be a resident of Australia, and thus look more attractive to a prospective employer, making my chances of employment even higher. Hi Charlotte27 Is this for your second year 417 visa? If so check out gumtree, or go to the job shop in Northbridge and they can tell you all about the harvest trail: what fruit is being picked and where. However beware, there was an article in the newspaper last week about 'the great backpacker migration'. Travellers on their 417 visa want a second year and head North in search of farm work, farmers have been inundated with backpackers phoning/pestering/showing up on their doorsteps looking for work. But like most things in Australia, if you know someone that has a farm, then it makes matters a lot easier. If you do however manage to secure work, make sure you don't get paid 'by the basket', as it can take a hell of a time to fill a basket. Some friends of mine have told me horror stories where farmers have paid them next to nothing, but work like trojans. Best of luck with the job hunt. Slàinte Mhath

Hi Rosie Opened my NAB account online and took about 4 days for it to be activated, and then transferred my money into the account using moneycorp, as they have deal with NAB where there is no transfer fee, usually about $30/$50 I think. After transferring your money, you need to set up an appointment with your NAB assistant at your chosen branch, but they give you instruction to do this, at this appointment they give you your new card and pin, and help you set up internet banking etc, and give you the option to also order a debit card, I chose this. I found the bank card system confusing at first, as when you pay using your card, on the pin pad you get the choice of savings, cheque or credit, but dont worry the bank clerk goes through it all with you. Hope this was of use and hope everything works out well.

Hello Arrived in Perth on my own on Sunday via Dubia from Glasgow, I nearly died with the heat when I first came off the plane but I seem to have adjusted quite quickly, considering Scotland was -2 when I left. I've been enjoying my first week exploring the city, so far it seems really nice and friendly, but everything seems to go alot slower than the UK, is that just me thats noticing this?? Heading to Fremantle tomorrow then see what the rest of the week brings. I've moved to Perth to find work as a graduate geologist/field assistant, so if anyone knows of the best places to start looking for work that would be great. Moving from Scotland, leave friday 25th, arriving sunday afternoon. Heading over with prospects of find work within the mining/resources sector as a graduate geologist. Starting to get nervous at the thought of it, and thinking is this the right move, but alot of people seem to have positive experiences on here so hopefully I can add to them. Don't know anyone in Perth, but moving into a house share in Leederville for the first two weeks, then in Nedlands for a few weeks, while I get on with job hunting/ finding more permanent accommodation. They are nice places from what I've heard and seen so hopefully the move will be a success! Very interesting and very helpful reading peoples posts on here so keep it up! Hello folks I have a few questions. Arriving in Perth next week on my own and very much looking forward to it but the nerves are starting to kick in! Could someone help me here with the basic things to do upon arrival... -I have a UK driving licence, what do I need to do with it in AUS to make it legal, just apple for an AUS one? -Health care, obviously with the NHS in Scotland, how do I apply for medicare, do I need to apply? -Tax code. Should I inform the tax people in the UK I'm moving, and how do I apply for an AUS tax code? -ID, I've heard that driving licence isn't a valid form of ID, what is valid other than Passport? I'm 21 so thats why I'm asking. (Babyface) If anyone else has anything else they could suggest it would be much appreciated. Hello Folks I have a 12hour stop over in Dubai airport. Leaving from Glasgow-Dubai-Perth. Can someone tell me if you are allowed to leave the airport as its only a short period of time? I keep hearing that you can get a free 30 day visa at the airport which allows you to do so, but I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with the answer. Sláinte mhath Allan

Hello NAB is the National Australian Bank. I contacted NAB and opened an account with them from Scotland, then contacted moneycorp to transfer my funds from £-$ into my new aus bank account, using NAB and moneycorp together means there is no transfer fee saving you money. You cannot access your funds until you reach Aus and arrange to meet with the bank, where they will issue you with bank cards etc. There are NAB accounts all over. I have transfered my funds, and move over to Perth in under two weeks, so when I arrive I will go to the NAB and arrange to access my account. Hope this helps.

Maritte16uk yes I am going on a working holiday visa with the aim of finding work when I arrive, and then hopefully sponsorship will follow, working as an exploration geologist, but may have to go in at a lower level just in order to get the foot in the door, e.g as a field assistant, which im ok about. The market has slowed down significantly so I would suggest to get out to Aus asap, I wish I had gone 6 months ago when I graduated, but hopefully there will be a job for me. Cheers

Hello My names Allan. Im moving over to Perth 1 month today on a 417 visa with the hope of getting work within the mining industry as I'm a geologist. Could anyone suggest the best way to take money to Perth? Would it be best to take it as travellers cheques, or is it possible to open an account before entering the country? I would feel uneasy carry a large amount of money when travelling, so whats the best way to do it from your own experience? Thanks folks

Two months today I arrive in Perth. Very much looking forward to the experience. I'm going over on a temporary 417 working visa (hoping to get sponsorship eventually), but don't have a job lined up..yet, but again hopefully that will come soon after arrival.
