barneystinson
Hi all, I am currently studying down the path to complete a degree in Paramedic science, my wife is currently on a nursing degree and when she is finished we would like to go to Australia. It seems she only needs her qualification and we can go even if she has done very little post qualification work. I thought great I would be finished my degree and instead of jumping onto an ambulance here and working, I would start in Perth, I just rang them on the phone and they said I need two years post degree or they would not take me, the only option I would have would be to go to Uni again and start again??? Sounds weird as I would then again leave with the same qualification?? Any Paramedics on here offer some advice please, as I don't want to come over having spent money to get this degree and unable to work, even though I would be qualified. Thanks all
Shona7
Not sure on the paramedic side of things but it's highly likely that your wife will also be required to have post grad experience as there are many new grads here who cannot get jobs. barneystinson
She will be a paediatric nurse just to add, which there are less of as in Australia i understand you have to do further training when qualified

Interested by this, if there are so many nurses and not enough jobs, why is it still on the list for PR visa?
Shona7
Interested by this, if there are so many nurses and not enough jobs, why is it still on the list for PR visa? There are jobs but they want skilled workers not newly qualified in my experience.
barneystinson
Difficult to get experience though without first working once qualified. I have an aunt who is senior management as a nurse over there. I'm hoping she will be able to help. The main issue was me St John not taking me without two years post degree on the road. Interesting part is I will be stuck with no way to get a job I guess

barneystinson
Gonna be hard as I'll be in Oz with only about 6 to 18 months post experience depending. If they would rather train someone new then take someone qualified then they have things backwards lol

If they would rather train someone new then take someone qualified then they have things backwards lol I can only guess, they don't want paramedics with no 'on the road' experience. Coming from a Paramedic point of view, I'd suggest gaining a few years experience in the UK with an ambo service there before transferring over. As I understand it SJA aren't recruiting for the foreseeable future anyway, so you've nothing to lose and everything to gain
barneystinson
I have no choice on time frame. As going with wife on her nursing visa. I'll go over as a qualified paramedic, if they don't want me then I'll look elsewhere
