Hi everyone,

I'm a UK journalist and I'll be in Perth in a couple of weeks to write about the resources boom/influx of workers/rising rental prices etc.

I was hoping to find a couple or family who had moved to Perth in the last six months who were willing to talk about how they were enjoying their new life. I'd like to ask questions such as: Why did you come? Was it easy finding a new job? What about finding rental accomodation (I've heard the market is very tight)? Are you earning enough to cover the cost of living? And are you pleased you came?

So if there are people out there who are willing to chat, do please drop me a line and maybe we can swap e-mail addresses. Hope to hear from some of you,

Many thanks,

Philippa

Don't want to spread too much doom and gloom but why, if you want to undertake a balanced piece of journalism, would you not also want to talk to some families where the move has been a nightmare for them? Perth is deep in the stranglehold of a boom economy and that historically usually means that the good times, and wealth, are only linked to specific sectors and that a lesser number benefit. There are so many Australians, and incomers,a re suffering from low income, rising costs, housing shortages, high rents and so on that by simply writing about how well some incomers are doing it may not be showing the real Perth.

Although I am not personally down to my last buck yet I would ask simply that you consider both sides of the coin if you possibly can. Thanks.

Hiya

I am not even in perth yet but my hubby is and so far for him its been an bloody nightmare. not perth itself but the goddam company who has sponsored him on the 457 visa. the uk recruiment company basically sold a good lifestyle and through research was done by us both. the company is a bloody disgrace the haves and have nots are alive and well working within the same company with the same bloody jobs. part of the site is well equipped the other part not. its getting to the point where i want him home and lets forget about it all. but my wordly goods are in transit on the high seas some where. i have to agree with your post and i am not even there yet

Also more than happy to exchange our experiences. We have been here just over 10 weeks and in that time I have had two jobs (second job is great and mining related) we purchased a house in 3 weeks (from offer to moving in). Finally contrary to popular belief my wife who is a Staff Nurse could not find local (Joondalup) employment as a nurse but is now working in another area.

Hi guys

I really get what your saying and to be honest I did agree to talk to Phillipa although our story is not all sunshine and palm trees to be perfectly honest. Its been a tough slog out here and anyone who is under the illusion that moving to Australia is a doddle is probably not being very realistic. I have good points and bad points about the place. One is the employment situation. We are in perth nearly 3 months and my OH is still looking for a job with no luck. I am quite happy to give both sides of the coin and I know many families who are in Perth that are finding it very much a struggle. We are lucky that I have a permanent job ( im not earning big money) and we dont have any small children (just a 14 yr old which brings it stresses). When I read Phillipa's post I didnt read that she was looking for just the good points but a balanced opinion on how we are enjoying it and I took from that well maybe that means not really enjoying it aswell. I have to stay emigrating has been one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life but I am glad I did it so Im not thinking in 20 years time.. what if .. what if... and if it doesnt work out in the long run we can always try something else.

cheers!

BIS and Acorn have some rep just now. I'm glad i gave them the body swerve and got a job elsewhere.

You did the right thing my friend... I almost made the same mistake. .

Both companies have a very bad rep ....

Acorn is a recruitment company based in the UK who recruit mechanical/diesel fitters for a company called BIS mining in Australia. By the way Acorn is opening an office based in Perth this month. This is a 100% fact.
