Job situation in Construction Industry???

Hope somebody can put my mind at rest ,we are hoping to be in Perth by september , me the mrs & 3 kids (15,11&6) I am a floorlayer by trade and was hoping I could get the heads up regarding the long term outlook for work . I keep hearing that there is a massive shortage of tradies in W.A but after speaking to a couple of mates who are over there I am now having doubts as to how true this is . The lads i know have been working on the Fiona Stanley hospital in Murdoch for a couple of years now but the job is virtually complete now & a lot of lads (all trades ) are now getting laid off & struggling to find other work .Is this just a cycle (busy, slow, busy ,slow etc ) like we used to have in uk or is it genuinely slowing down ? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi Floorman

MMMMMMMM av herd like wise but I was in Perth last October and the papers were saying 2013 was going to be the worst year for Tradies shortfall ever which sounded promising My sister and Bro in law av been there for 14 years and he;s never been out of work (he's a Bricky) but he was saying the words going round thats the shortfall is going to be towards the end of the year Think you got to go over there with the attitude of wanting to work and go finding work as some folk go over thinking they going to walk straight into a job but he says if you good and confident in what you do you should have no probs

Where you based in UK

Hi bud yeah me to very poor

Ive been over a few times with my sister living there and never want to get on the plane back,

Ive been in touch with a few agencies but none were very forth coming with information just the usual (difficult to do anything until I'm over permanently) which I suppose is true but I wasn't asking for a job just information

I speak with with the brother in law regular and he says things have slowed a bit but he has got some good contacts so fingers crossed

I went over 4 years ago and had a few job offers but I had no visa (typical) lol

Hi Jonathan

When you traveling over have herd different stories bout work but I think it has slowed down but still a lot more work than here salaries seem to differ from $25 to $40 per hour my nephews mate is a chippy and I think he's on about $70000 a year

I would take over everything you got tool wise my Brother in law was a builder in the UK and he took everything over he might not use it all on sight there but he certainly used things working on the house are you taking a container over

Hi m8 might be to late for a container but depends on how you go about it you can have a full one to yourself or you can part share but you will have to wait till the container is full if you part share and it takes about 8 weeks from leaving the UK I think you can put things as luggage with emirates your aloud 60kg instead of the usual 30 if you going on a one way ticket but I would check with the airlines

We fly out on the 2nd of March and fly back on the 22nd

Where about will you be stopping in Perth and have you got work sorted

Hi Lou Lou I am an electrician been over here 4 months now , found it difficult and frustrating finding work at first ( they say wa stands for wait awhile) if you are coming over on a prv like we did you will have to apply for electrical licence from energy safety and then book youself on the gap training course. He will have to work as a trades assistant until he is qualified trouble is their are not a lot of these jobs around ,it might be a good idea to look at oz job sites while u r waiting to come over.we love it over here and don't regret the move good luck dave.

Hi Allen Famiy!

Thanks for reply , yes we do have PR . Going to apply for his restricted licence before we come over, waiting for college to open back up to find out the course dates . Have heard about not many places wanting to take on people without the A grade , just frustrating really after all the stuff he had to do to proof he was electrcian! Did you have a job lined up before you went over?

Cheers

Lou

Hi lou Lou I did not have a job lined up before I came over, also just to let u know we had to wait about 6 weeks before energy safety processed our licence after a lot of phone calls complaining.also the college would not let me book on the course until I had my licence approved.all the best dave.

Hi guys, I have being reading some threads and its got me worried. My husband and I are currently applying for a visa through my nursing, however my husband is a spark. The plan was when visa granted we would apply for jobs for him to work as apprentice while he got his licence! However after reading your thread it sounds like this may not be as easy as we thought! We were under the impression that Western Australia were crying out for sparks. We are contemplating the 189 visa or 190 with state sponsorship however it sounds like the job search would be considerably limited if we go for the sponsorship.Any advice? Please help!!!! Many thanks jody and Dave.

Would you advise that he gets his license prior? Or work and go to TAFE college. Bearing in mind that as I am the visa applicant that he will not have done vettases!

Providing the rules don't change before you get here your husband will have the easy route as he is coming on your visa. He can apply to TRA once he resides in Australia( takes up to 3 months i am told)Then he does a 1 week nobody can fail course and gets his license. All the other fun stuff is only if you are the main applicant for PR ( yup weird eh?). But i have been told its changing and everyone will be doing gap training soon. So best to ask before you come to Oz.
