Medicare help!!!

The uk and Australia have a reciprocal agreement that citizens of each others countries can get access to healthcare when in the other country. When we were on our working holiday a few years ago my hubby had to have tests on his heart and all were covered through medicare once he registered. Maybe someone else can confirm if the reciprocal agreement doesn't apply for the 489 visa?

Hi All,

Just wondering if i should take out Travel/Holiday insurance in the uk for going out to Oz? (for short term cover) Or should i wait till i get to Perth and take out medicare?

Could someone explain medicare and cost etc?

Thanks

It will need to be more specialist insurance as normal travel insurance doesn't cover you unless you are resident in the UK and have purchased a return ticket. If you require treatment on route it could be very expensive and under any reciprocal agreement you foot the bill for your repatriation costs so it's definitely worth buying insurance to cover you until you get to Oz and register with Medicare.
