Guest Nickynoo
Hello folks! We are off to Perth hopefully at the end of the year once we have finished selling the house. We had always been set on moving to Secret Harbour as had heard so much about it from friends who live there. Since reading some threads on here I am now a little put off and having been researching other suburbs that might be suitable. Well now I have a list of suburbs and have no idea which one to choose and how to even pick the final two!! So, I am calling on the lovely folk on here (posted on PIO also) who have lived/visited any of these suburbs to try and help me make a decision! I suppose our main criteria are as follows: Good primary school for my five year old soon (happy to consider private) Good community feel (we are used to a village) Lots of outdoor space and parks as my son has sooooo much energy to burn!! Low crime area Quiet area as not a city girl but love to visit for shopping! Hubby will be working in CBD so will need to get the train. Happy to be driving distance from the beach but as long as its easy to get there! Last of all, here are the suburbs that I have looked at: Secret Harbour Melville Duncraig Atwell Baldivis Leeming Mundaring area (Perth Hills) (issue with bushfires??) If you can think of any others that you think sound like they fit my requirements, please let me know but I am trying to reduce the number not increase! So any good points and bad points would really really help me as I am desperately trying to decide!! Your help and advice is as always very much appreciated. Regards Anouska x Hi Anouska, I am still interested in Secret Harbour as our friends rave about it but I was a little concerned at the school reports for Comet Bay. I also read that there is a new housing estate being built nearby and the children from there will have to go to Comet Bay as a new school might not be built as first thought. This would mean a very large school! Its good to keep options open and make sure that we are happy with the area chosen. It is such an important decision after all! There are so many lovely suburbs and these forums are perfect for getting a feel for what its like to live there. Good luck with your move! Guest Anouska
Hi Nicky, Yes I agree with what you have said about the schools, I have herd that most state school are very similar and not like the UK . ( primary seem to be better than senior) Have you thought of an independent school? I think that's the path will take. I am a little confused, like you really want to get it right . Nicky xx Keep an open mind and wait until you get here. I have a friend who was set on Warnbro (I have never been there!) They got a rental there and within a month were not happy, moved to another suburb and were happy as larry. See how you feel when you get here. Take a holiday rental somewhere central and do lots of driving around.

Guest craigandkerry
http://localvoices.realestate.com.au/search/perth-greater-western-australia We are hopefully (fingers crossed and bribes payable to my sponsor allowing) heading out in the new year. we spend most days staring at reports of areas, crime rates, transport links etc etc. we spend so much time looking at the usual sorts of websites that it's probably for the best we do go to Perth becuse if not we'd get sacked for using the tinternet rather working. Anyway, have a look at this link, it lets you choose what's important i.e. near beach, schools etc and then you can work out the areas from there. Good luck

ali
Hi Nicky - I answered your post on PIO - we live in Leeming and older suburb but close to just about everything. Schools in the area have a good reputation too. Not everyones cup of tea because it's an older suburb - but it does mean that usually the plot is bigger. flossiepom
i'm from durham, but I know Leeds really well can't wait to get over there, just need our house rented out!
Guest craigandkerry
Aye, Leeds isn't too bad but it isn't WA. My brother is out there working in oil and gas and I've been to visit and the difference in lifestyle is the main appeal. our house is on the market and with any luck it'll sell in next couple of months if not then it's easily rented. But really could do with the sale so we can set up and get rent paid for the full year and we can not worry about being short of cash. We go for a holiday in October and still hopeful for January move.

Nicky xx Hi I reckon that where ever you consider you are going to find that someone has had a negative experience and are only too happy to share that with you, people tend to easily recollect their negative experiences rather than their good ones, its just human nature. I reckon that your going to have to find what 5 (or so) criteria are important to you and then number them 1 to 10, add them up for each suburb and you may be able to cut down your short list on objective reasons rather than what so and so said. You should be able to gather most of the information you need from this, this one is for secret harbour, http://www.locationlowdown.com.au/search/results/WA/Secret%20Harbour Good luck with your search Bob
Give me a break!
Living and loving Secret Harbour (for now), a coastal suburb with a pretty good infrastructure already in place. Windy and full of Poms (dont think the two are linked:biglaugh:) Two Primary Schools and one Secondary school and a really lovely Pub and Golf Course and clubhouse. A nice little shopping centre and well planned roads and parks. Baldivis is a lovely area again. More inland and less windy. Again well thought out and with good infrastructure, some beautiful parks and some lovely pubs. No Secondary school yet but I thinks they are building one soon? Cant help with the other suburbs sorry. Good luck:wubclub:
Guest catbells
i've got my own recruitment business, but i'm leaving that behind for a new recruitment role in perth! you? Hi Just read that you have applied for a 457. My employer is applying for a nomination code and has asked for various personal details. Should we be applying for the 457 visa or do we wait for the employer to give us the green light to apply? Not using an agent as I applied for a position directly to the hospital. I dont want to appear clueless to the new employer by asking too many questions. Also if you can how long does all this take. Our cars and house are all up for sale here in the uk, wanting to be in Perth November 2011 ish, Many thanks
Guest Blond1e
Hi we just arrived in Secret Harbour 5 days ago, heres my opinion..... I am a worrier by nature and was convinced the schools would be terrible and my two precious kids would be let down. Can't vouch for the long term education but the kids started school today and the teachers were AMAZINGLY accommodating to our whole family (even offered to help me meet other mums and make friends). some of the mums saw I was new and had a little chat with me and were super lovely. lady at the uniform shop spoke for ages and even convinced me to help out. the headmaster took an hour of his time to show us the whole school even though we had just dropped in unannounced. he was honest about everything none of which was bad anyway. Said the school was very big but I don't see how that impacts my kids as the class sizes are 24 kids in a class and the only time they notice its a big school is at lunch time when they play. I have been blown away by everybodies kindness here. Secret harbour has alot of very same looking houses but they are all very pleasant. Shops are ok - no clothing type shops so you have to drive to Mandurah or meadow Springs but its a nice little drive. Beach is lovely and parks are GREAT here in Secret. my sister lived in perth for 3 years and has now moved to a remote area temporarily for work - she came down to perth to see me when we arrived and liked secret so much within a day she'd bought a gorgeous house in Secret Harbour. if you want busy and vibrant don't choose secret harbour if you want family fun and peaceful happy times then this is the place. Weedolly
Im glad you like it so much but it just shows how differently people think of places - I absolutely hated it. We went to visit twice and to me it was just like someone had taken a huge housing estate and plonked it in a spare space that they found. There were loads of lovely houses and am sure everyone is very friendly but it just felt isolated - maybe its because I lived on a big new estate before and didnt like that either haha. It just confirms that you need to see somewhere before you decide thats where you want to live. Hope you enjoy living there.
ali
I think that's true Weedolly - we had a house built in the UK and always said had we know the estate would have grown so big - we may not have done so. Here, we've moved into an older suburb, feels more spread out which suits us (but not for others)
