Hello

My names Allan. Im moving over to Perth 1 month today on a 417 visa with the hope of getting work within the mining industry as I'm a geologist.

Could anyone suggest the best way to take money to Perth? Would it be best to take it as travellers cheques, or is it possible to open an account before entering the country? I would feel uneasy carry a large amount of money when travelling, so whats the best way to do it from your own experience?

Thanks folks

Open NAB account on line from UK, transfer into it via Moneycorp who do free transfers for NAB customers at better than bank rates, worked well for us, good luck

totally agree with this, this is what we did prior to arriving in Perth its easy peasy to do ................. you get a better rate transferring money this way

Just repeating what everyone else has said, but we used Westpac and stuck it into a savings account (and also had a current account opened). Also, depending on the amount of money involved, worthwhile shopping around. I found Moneycorp better at large amounts and HiFX better at smaller amounts.

Cheers

You can open an account from anywhere and transfer money, they will post you the forms and you can either visit aus embassy or confirm it when u get there, they need to see u are real person before allow transaction,.

You can transfer money as soon as u open the account but cant draw it out until u visit your branch in aus and show id etc.

Its dead easy i did mine from thailand. U can take $10 in cash without declaring

Can you open a NAB account from offshore?

How much do you save if you are NAB? I am HSBC. Maybe I should open a NAB to save money then? I'd do it for even a few $$$'s to save money.

Hello

NAB is the National Australian Bank. I contacted NAB and opened an account with them from Scotland, then contacted moneycorp to transfer my funds from £-$ into my new aus bank account, using NAB and moneycorp together means there is no transfer fee saving you money. You cannot access your funds until you reach Aus and arrange to meet with the bank, where they will issue you with bank cards etc. There are NAB accounts all over.

I have transfered my funds, and move over to Perth in under two weeks, so when I arrive I will go to the NAB and arrange to access my account.

Hope this helps.

Westpac Bank have specialist Migrant team, you can open an account also via their London office. Accounts can be opened before you arrive. If you are moving permanently be sure to discuss the transfer of your UKpension into Super ASAP, massive benefits, few downsides. I can help with any accounts set-up or other financial stuff if you want, it's my job after all! Ha ha ;-)
