portlaunay
(and possibly NZ) There are probably more out there than you realise... Not really widely known but Oz has a pretty decent film industry. This has been touched on in a number of threads but I thought it might be useful to have a single resource. So; Title IMDB link if poss Synopsis Your thoughts My start is The Castle http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118826/?ref_=sr_1 A Melbourne family are faced with eviction when the airport they live besides plans to expand and swallow up their home. I love the script, there are some brilliant lines that it's easy to pass over - "Dad reckons fishing is 10% brains and 95% muscle, the rest is just good luck." It's a fantastically funny film and very heartwarming. My kids think it's hysterical too. The humour is very Australian and I know a lot of people who just don't get if you want a look at Aussie culture it's an interesting observation. Never got round to watching the dish, even though I've looked round the observatory & telescope in question at Parkes in NSW. Film gets high marks on imdb & rotten tomatoes, will have to look out for it.

Redsquare
I'm intrigued by Bran Nue Dae but I don't do musicals. Went to see Les Mis at the cinema and thought it was a good story spoiled by all the singing. Have orders The Castle from fleabay and will hopefully be watching it very soon. portlaunay
Watched The Castle this morning. Loved it! Wife cried. Every time you're asked to justify your point of view, in the back of your mind you'll want to shrug your shoulders and say, "It's the vibe." You'll never be able to scan Gumtree without thinking, "He's dreaming!" And every time you dig a hole you'll laugh at the thought of it filling with water. Brilliant film. Redsquare
Malcolm http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091464/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3 Set in Melbourne, Malcolm is a chronically shy mechanical genius who has just been fired for building his own tram. He gets Frank, who has just been released from jail, moves in to help pay the bills. Malcolm, with Franks help, turns to a life of crime. I've not seen this in years but it's another Australian gem. Funny and charming... Again with the charming! What is it with Aussie film makers and charming?
