Trouble finding a Project Management job in Perth

Hello all,

I have been looking for a Perth based Project Management role for the past five months but have not had any luck.

I am currently based in the UK and hold a working holiday visa. I have been trying to secure a position prior to leaving the UK without much luck. I am looking for short term 2-6 month contract roles.

Once I get settled, my Australian partner and I will apply for the Partner Visa.

If anyone can put me in touch with someone who might be able to help, it would be greatly appreciated. In return, I am also a trained proof reader should anyone need help in this area.

Thanks

Tim

Have you tried the obvioius, Hayes? I have to be brutally honest, it is not that easy to get a job when you are a resident, it is even harder if you are overseas and don't have the "WA" experience, and are not able to front up to people. My advice would be to wait until you get here and present yourself to prospective employers, or to an agency and be prepared to do anything in your field, that includes working away from home. You will achieve very little via emails and phone calls, It doesn't work that way here. Hope this helps

Tim - here is my advice.

1) Forget Hays - Especially in Perth. Hopeless.

2) Make sure you are PRINCE2 qualified. They are obsessed with qualifications here.

3) Get your visa then move over here. You need to be in Perth to get a job. Period. It took me 2 or 3 months and it was HARD going.

4) Project work is starting to pick up a bit in the Perth market but the massive companies like Rio Tinto, Fortescue, BHP Billiton are being cautious because of Kevin Rudd's proposed super tax.

You need to be here so you can go into all the recruitment agencies on St George's Terrace so they can chat with you and make sure you aren't a freak basically. They get you in after you respond to an advert of Seek or Linkme - and then sometimes you realise after about 10 minutes there was no real job - and they are just fishing for CV's. I have become quite good friends with the guy who got me my job and he has let me in on many of the grubby secrets.

A lot of the people I am talking to in business are worried about another mini local recession coming in November /December time. House prices in many areas and price brackets are still going down - and Kevin Rudd's tax will not inspire confidence as I mentioned earlier.

It is definitely better than it was end of last year in terms of project work - but it has yet to break into a trot let alone a gallop.

Some agencies I'd recommend you try:-

Aston Recruitment

Randstad

Talent International

Sense Recruitment

You need to get your first WA job. Then you will be off an running. Nobody here gives two hoots what budgets you controlled in London or things you have led. Trust me on this! They are more interested in what you have done here and whether you know anything about mining or the mining industry.

Hope this helps

KW.

thanks for the response.

I am pleased to say that I found work prior to flying out and am now happily working in south perth. It is only on a 6 month contract, as my visa limits me to 6 months which each employer, but its a good start.

Do you have any advice on gaining employeer sponsorship?

Thanks again.

Hi KW

I have similar problem, although it seems much complicated!

I have a conditional visa which forced me to live and work in regional visa for 2 years, and for obtaining PR I have to work at least 1 year /full -time here! Now I live in mandurah , I am an architect and have an assessment (project manager) from vetassess WA. I can t any job and it is worried me , cause I couldn't continue in this case. Can you help me and lead me what to do? I have a very bad condition now, as my husband goes to perth every day for attending English classes . so he couldn't help me any more. I would be appriciated if you give me any tip.

Thanks a lot

Gol
