Suburbs in Mandurah

Childs Family

Recommended Posts

Hi all. We're new to this forum. We're a family of 4 making the move to Perth around mid November and we're heading to Mandurah. Just wondered if anyone can help with info on suburbs and primary schools. Our daughter will be starting year 5 and our son year 6 so we need to look at high schools too. I know we need to get over there and see it for ourselves before we make any decision on where we settle, but would be grateful for any views and opinions that anyone can offer who are already over there living in this region.

Thank you!

You are not actually moving to Perth, but to a city 70km away, bit like saying I am moving to Leicester but living in Birmingham. Keep that in mind when thinking about the commute to the city for work or social events - theatre, sports events or just a night out.

Schools - go on here - type in Mandurah and you can check out the schools. Click on Naplan, results in numbers - green means above average, red means below. http://www.myschool.edu.au/

A few of the primaries are very poor so choose your suburb carefully - and the state high schools also perform badly, lots of folk on here who live in Mandurah opt to go private.

Thanks for the replies.

We have been looking at various areas such as Halls Head, Seascapes, Madora Bay, Meadow Springs and Dawesville. Have heard that Madora Bay is lovely but there are isn't a primary school there.

Have looked at the website http://www.myschool.edu.au to research schools in the above areas but to be honest I'm finding it all quite overwhelming!

Would be interested to hear from anyone who lives in these areas or with children at primary schools in these areas.

Thanks

How long have you lived in Halls Head for? Can I ask what school you teach at?

Like every parent finding a good school is really important so I would be grateful for any advice/information you can offer.

Out of interest, when do the schools break up for summer? We plan to arrive mid-end November to look at schools and ideally secure places for the children before the summer break so they can start at beginning of new term with everyone else. Not sure if that's realistic or not but that's the plan anyway!

Hi. I'm looking forward to any good advise. We are moving the end of September and my biggest concern is finding a school for my 14 year old son. I just want him to settle in a school in the Mandurah area. I've looked on the my school website but feel we need to view to get a true feel of the school.

Halls Head and Seascapes are sort of blended into each other with the later been the southern end and generally the newer. Both are nice, though the beach at Seascapes is not suitable for swimming due to rocks.

Meadow Springs is fine. Has a decent shopping centre and a very good, if expensive butcher.

I don't know Madora Bay very well, but it does have a reputation for being a bit rough.

Dawesville is great. Obviously I am biased as that is where I live lol. There are two parts to it. Old / estuary side, which I would avoid simply because being next to the estuary means mosquitos. Then the ocean side on the Cut Golf Club. This is one of the most expensive suburbs of Mandurah. Its advantages are that it is next to the beach and it is the only patrolled beach in Mandurah and has a very popular surf club which teaches kids from a very young age. Most of the houses have nice views and there are some bargains to be had for rentals. I will PM you some details. The down side is we don't have any schools. But, I know we have a number of young children in the area and given most are living in fairly expensive houses, I would imagine they are going to a decent school.

Hi guys we live in San remo right next to madora bay and can honestly say both areas are fantastic ,really family friendly and can easily boast some of the best beaches in Mandy ,plus surf club and lovely little cafe right on tbe beach .Our daughter 13 yr goes to fredwick irwin school settled in a treat and doing very well and making lots of new friends (i don,t know why we worried so much kids adapt so easily). Also for the dads theres a little pub on madora bay foreshore where a few dads meet up on a thursday night for purely social reasons ha ha.Any questions give us a shout.

Sounds like you're in a great location! It's good to hear your daughter settled well into school. I hope mine do too (son 10yrs and daughter 9yrs). I'm sure being so close to the beach will help!

sorry I posted my response to wrong member, I'll try again :) we also looking at ths school I fly ths morning so let you know how we get on.

We live in halls head and really love it, sitting in the back garden in the evening listening to the ocean is pretty special! As VS said earlier, I personally would avoid the eastern side of the main road (old coast road I think it's called) because of the proximity to the estuary and therefore mozzie breeding grounds, but horses for courses, we've got friends that side and they don't seem bothered by it at all.

Our kids (7 and 4) go to south halls head and we're happy with it, the amount our youngest has learnt in kindy is amazing! Naplan results are above the other schools in the area (although these results alone are only a small part of what makes a good school IMO). As well as the academic stuff they have a really great music teacher who stands out to me as a real asset for the school.

I can't really comment on high schools as our kids are not there yet. The public ones seem to get a bad wrap, not sure if it's still deserved or if it's historical, but I've met several people who are happy with the local high school. Again I'm sure it's horses for courses. Dawesville has got two primary schools (one public, ocean road and one private, st Damien's) but no high school.

I saw someone advertising a break lease in the catchment area for south halls head the other day, feel free to PM me if you want any more info about anything.

Hi very stormy, Do you guys live in beside the cut? Me and my family live in seascapes just now but are in the process of securing a plot /new build in beside there what is the area like? We have visited a few times and love it.

TIA

Yes, I am on the south side of the cut on the golf course.

The area is fairly quiet but very nice and friendly. We have been there nearly 8 years - most of it renting and then moved into our new build this year. It is very handy for the beach and the golf club has a nice restaurant and bar.
