Nurses Thread!

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone could help. I'm sure these questions have all been answered before but I have many! I qualified as a mental health nurse in 2003 with a diploma and have been working ever since. I have experience in forensic, adult acute, neuropsychiatry and community for the past 6 years. I am due to complete my top up degree this summer. My husband and I are looking to go to Perth on a permanent visa. What is the difference between enrolled nurse and registered nurse? What is the difference with all the pay levels? What is maternity leave like in Perth? How long do u need to be working before you can have mat leave?

What is the working environment like for nurses esp community? What are the caseloads like?

Many thanks in advance

Karen

Enrolled nurses have less training, they are qualified but supervised by the RN - If you have completed 3 years training then you are an RN.

Pay levels - RN: $58,398 - $76,846 depending on experience. If you have been qualified since 2003 you should expect to get the highest level 1 pay scale.

CN (level 2 jobs) are shift coordinators and Community nurses - $79,262 - $84,214. Case loads depend where you work, we have 4 MDT teams working from 2 clinics - case loads don't usually go above 35. Some services also work weekends in community - our service you have to do one weekend day every 3 weeks.

You usually have to be with your employer a year before maternity pay.

Ali:- thank you so much for those informative answers, helps to know how everything works.

Another question if I may, what is nursing like in oz, I've heard that as a nurse you are less autonomous as you are here?

I think that's changing because of the influence of nurses like us. Aus doesn't have a specialist MH branch of training, I think as the Dr's start to trust your clinical skills and judgement then it becomes more of a shared care model, I feel quite autonomous in my practice. Resources are different in that a lot of services are provided by non government organisations rather than in house. Feel free to contact me if you're applying for jobs - happy to give pointers for addressing the selection criteria. So many British nurses fail to address this and don't get past short listing.

You can buy books and CDs on Amazon which have lots of examples to work through and past papers. Look for the academic level 8/9. The reading and writing is a higher level but the other two areas are the same as the general exam. If people struggle it's usually with the reading/ comprehension as the questions trip people up.

Hi Wendy, good luck with everything.

I am due to start my Degree in Adult Nursing in september, so will therefore have to wait for at least 3 years until i qualify before we can move to Aus. I too wouldn't want to wait much longer than that as my oldest child has just turned 15.

I just wanted to ask you what type of visa you will be going on? As i thought my only option as a newly qualified nurse would be via a sponsor?

If you or anyone else could give me advice on what my options for moving to perth as a newly qualified nurse will be then that would be greatly appreciated.

My hubby will also qualify as a plumber at the same time, dont know if this will have any effect?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Hi, i am due to start my adult nursing degree in september. My sister is emigrating to perth this year and am hoping me and my family can follow when i qualify. Obviously it is going to be at least 3 years until i qualify but i was wondering if anyone knows how good my chances would be of getting a sponsor as a newly qualified nurse? As i wont be able to apply for a visa as i will not have the 3 years on the job experience that is necessary.

The reason that we will want to emigrate not long after qualifying is not only because we have wanted to go for so long, but because our oldest child is just turned 15, so we need to get there asap for her sake too.

Any advicce would be kindly acepted.

Thanks

Thanks Lou,will order up some study materials today, not feeling confident about gaining the right marks though

Hi all! :) I was wondering if anyone can shed me some light ...

I am an RN, with post reg experience both in the Philippines and the UK. I am planning to go for skilled migration under subclass 189. I would like to claim points for 3 years overseas experience. But just got in a bit of confusion as my post-reg nursing experience in the UK is only 1yr, 9mos (although if you would consider the period of supervised nursing practice, I would have 2 years, 4 months total). That is on top of 1 yr post-reg experience in the Philippines. So my question is....do I fall short for the 3-year overseas work experience requirement?

Reading the requirements, it says I needed "skilled employment in your nominated skilled occupation or a closely related skilled occupation". So....is working as a healthcare assistant (while on supervised nursing practice), for example, classed as a 'closely related profession?'.

I have worked 3 years in the healthcare industry in the UK, but only less than 2 years post-reg as a nurse. HELP!

Hi there

We have been here 6 weeks now I'm a Critical Care Nurse with 18 years experience, I have been offered a job that starts in September but I'm still waiting for my registration to come through. AHPRA are taking forever to do my application I've had to send my documents to them twice as they needed a more up to date reference & certificate of Good standing from NMC as they were from last year, also my certificates had to be certified by a Notary public not just a solicitor. I sent everything they asked for before we left the UK & heard no more about it, it's been 6 weeks now so phoned them to find put what's going on with my application to be told they have sent a letter to me last week to the UK informing me I had documents missing:arghh: Wouldn't mind but I have emailed them twice recently informing them of my address in Australia. Just waiting now for letter to be re-sent to my address over here, finding it very frustrating as was hoping to be doing some agency work by now while I waited for my new job to start .

has anyone else had these issues with AHPRA since they changed their process?

Hi there

My application to AHPRA was submitted the last week of October 2013, despite submission of all copy documents which had been originally certified by a notary in the UK I was asked to have them re-certified here in WA. Then due to a change in the assessment of overseas qualified nurses on 7th November I was asked to arrange for a transcription of my original RGN training (1990-1993) from the NMC. This was all duly done and submitted by the specified deadline of 27th November 2013. An email arrived after prompting, from AHPRA stating that all my documents were in order and had been submitted to the application processing panel........ here we are 11th June 2014 and I'm still waiting for outcome!!!! This is despite calling AHPRA every 4 weeks for an update, emailing a named person for updates and being given specific dates on which my application was to be assessed and when I might expect to have notification. On Friday last week I received an email saying a decision would be with me by email early this week, followed by an official letter in the post.......patiently waiting.......:skeptical:

Hi,

So glad to find this thread! I am a tissue viability nurse band 6 (for the last 18months) I have spent two years in ITU and a further 4years in acute medicine. I am happy to work on the wards again as a band 5 (or whatever the equivalent is), I would like though to continue my tissue viability pathway for the time being with particular interest in burns unit/skin grafting etc.

Is there a specialist role like this available in Oz? I've heard specialist roles like this are hard to come by.

What kind of wages can I expect as a full time nurse? I've read about salary packages etc. Is it best to live near the hospital or is commuting relatively easy? Half hour tops. i've read migration fees can become quite hefty. If I was to come on a sponser what kind of help do you get with those fees? And also ifI take a full time sponser how long do I have to work before I can reduce my hours to part time?

Our aim is to come on my visa maybe on a sponser come out a month or two before the job starts (with savings)to settle the family in, and then when my husband finds work, if it earns enough reduce my hours to part time.

with my experience, what visa would I be best applying for?

does this sound viable?

Hi there,

It all still applies, you need a 7 or above in each section on the academic test for ANMAC, but if you want 8s for immigration, you can go back and sit the general test.

Prepare well for it, and with any luck you might get 8s first time round.

Thankfully I only needed to sit the academic test, but I really did a lot of prep, it's not difficult, it's really just learning what is required! And practising, there's loads of material on line.

Good luck!

I've got my IELTS result due this Friday,I also need 8's across the board,I was hoping it was an average of 8,but agent says NO  Minimum of 8's required in each part...

I've got bob hope of that happening first time around, but I can sit it again and practice properly !

Then, next weekend I have got my skills assessment in London,it's my busiest time of the year so bad planning on my part. Again I will give it my best shot, within a couple of weeks I will be either all ready to go or have to keep trying !

Hi all nurses!

I am am new to all of this, all we have done so far is save money! I have only been qualified a few months and when I spoke to a company before they said I would need 8 in the ielts to get 20 points to compensate for not having the 3 years experience mentioned on the immi site. Is this right? I confused as to what I need to do and where to start. I'm guessing it's ielts first but what to do next. I am hoping we can get the process started as soon as possible. Any advice welcomed !! Be interested to hear from nurses in similar situation or ones who have moved and can give info on what it's like to work as a nurse there and securing a job.

Thanks in advance

Claire

Can I just check, you say your sending off your skills assessment On a certain date, why is that ? Other than book the ielts I am unsure of what to do next? Still undecided about an agent. Have u been looking at jobs x

Hi everyone, I arrived in Perth at the beginning of April expecting my registration to be completed. Big mistake AHPRA have now taken 6 months after losing my first application and now 3 months after confirming receipt of the second with all documents requested. I have been offered a job but an unable to accept it and am now working as a Nurse Assistant for an agency just to try and pay our rent. I have been to the office in Perth many times and phoned on a daily basis and can confidently say it is the most dysfunctional and incompetent government department I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Whatever you do, do not come to Australia without being registered as you could end up going home like we will if it's not sorted soon. Luckily I had inheritance to bring but that is depleting fast. The easy bit was getting permanent residency the hard part starts with AHPRA. If anyone else is having a similar sort of issue please let me know. I am sure the Australian tax payers would like to know Nurses and their families are beinggiven permanent residency status but when they arrive instead of going to hospitals they are signing on for unemployment benefits and rent assistance which is exactly what I have had to do. I am at the stage where my husband and two children will be camping outside the AHPRA office with me in Perth with placards as I am banging my head on a brick wall. If anyone else is in the same position please contact me and come join us at the Office. Thanks, Emma

Hi Emma,

If you check on a thread 'what's happening with AHPRA' on the PIO forum, you will see you are certainly not alone!

Best wishes.
