Hi All, my names Neil currently sat in Cheshire reading thorough the forum on here, attempting to build my knowledge.

 

After reading so many informative posts on a variety of subjects, thought it only polite to post a hello.

 

I am on a 8 week countdown on my move to Perth. 1st June all being well with visa being confirmed in time. Coming over on a 457 sponsored visa with a job in place as a Manager of a recruitment firm, working out of South Perth.

 

Its been a fairly quick decision for us, and the info provided via all your posts has helped build a foundation knowledge over a short period of time. The family will be joining me end of July once the school term is up.

 

I am likely to use the time from me getting there, to sort a rental and all the other comforts the family will need upon there arrival.

 

My initial fears were living costs and settling UK standing orders of on loans and other things to simplify our outgoings.

 

Location wise for the rental we will be looking South Perth, so areas such as Coogee, Success have been recommended by my employer however keen on Fremantle myself, so any tips on this much appreciated.

 

I want to build some connections via the site to ease the first few months and get myself social as looking forward to meeting new people and learning new things from all of you.

 

Every day is a school day it appears just learnt tonight that 4K school fees apply due to the type of visa i am on, so dropped the new employer an email with the question of can they built this into the relocation package...dont fancy my odds but as my old dear used to say, if you dont ask etc. Will update you on his reply tomorrow for anyone interested.

 

Anyway pleased to make the introduction, don't feel like a peeper now if nothing else.

Welcome to the forum,

 

Yes the fees for schooling for the temporary visa have only been introduced in the last 12 months - these are an annual payment so your employer may not want to pay them for the length of your contract but hope you can get some remuneration to help with the initial costs.

 

I would say have a look at the suburbs when you get it - everyone is different, I love Freo but my hubby couldn't live there, I'm sure my own suburb which I think is great, others might think of as too old etc.

Suburbs will very much come down to budget.

 

Do make yourself very aware of the conditions on 457 visas and look at gaining PR as soon as possible - school fees are the least of the issues with 457

The biggest issues are first, that you understand this is a temporary visa and has no automatic path to permanent.

 

The second, flows from that as many partners of 457's can find it harder to get work as they are only temporary and companies can be funny about it. Also, their ability to remain in the country isn't in their own hands.

 

That raises probably the most important aspect. The visa is tied to the employer. So, if you were to lose your job for any reason, you would only have 90 days to find another company willing and able to sponsor (note - not every company can) or you would all have to leave the country. You would be surprised how many people are impacted by this and in the current economic situation it would be a particular concern. WA is having some major economic issues and to be honest I am surprised a company are sponsoring a recruitment position as there are a lot of people in recruitment that have lost their jobs recently.

 

You wont be entitled to any financial assistance such as the Oz equivalent of child payments.

 

The last big thing to consider is that if your children reach university age or college age while on a 457, they are regarded as international students. This would mean no government assistance and very high fees. At the same time, if they returned to the UK to study, they would have to wait a couple of years or be treated as international students in the UK.

Hi verystormy, a big thanks for taking the time to reply further with the details.

 

All seem very valid points and thankfully have read each through the forum prior so no unpleasant surprises like the school fees.

 

I am comfortable with the temporary status myself as its a trial for both party's before any commitments are made. We ourselves are looking at this as a 4 year assignment and see how it goes before a PR would interest me.

 

As as for the risk of loosing my job while on the visa it might happen as its obviously a risk but resting on its never happened to me before and always working in a sales based role you are as good as your own individual performance and when your making your employer lots of new money they have not seen before I find this creates security as well as further opportunitys, the flip side being that if I underperform then I would expect to be let go. It's the natural way of working life.

 

Kids are young, one 8 year old and one 1 year old so the university days are a little off however already fearing the day they say dad I want to go to Uni. Lol.

 

Good news on the school fees the employer has agreed to pay the first 6 months, until my earnings are boosted with there commission structure. What a great guy I could not ask for much more. He can not do enough for me.

 

I really appreciate your input as I admire the reality picture of things ahead over the everything Rosie picture however also love facing upto challenges and coming out the other side in a winning position. I was a born fighter lol.

We got PR, became citizens in November and have worked myself onto the ops board of Australia's largest technical and process training business (DDLS since you asked).... I was aware of all the risks....BUT that just makes you more committed to make it work. Only regret? I like your position of going backwards to come forward, similar to me, as a company director for the one of the UK's largest Industrial Recruiters, won't name drop at this point. Taking a role as a BM with scope of that developing into a director role within 2 years does not phase me, also allows me to climatise so to speak to the new marketplace etc. Also enjoy myself with little expectation that i know i can deliver against in the early days.

Well done on your climb to greatness in the time you have been over there.

I will have a look at DDLS later if you dont mind, if anything helps get familiar with other business operating. Also had a quick link at your property project looks mint, i bet you can't wait to get yourself into it and start enjoying the fruit of your hard labour.

 

Question - would you of brought a house while under under the 457 visa?

If you fancy a beer in July let me know, as intrigued on the brother in law story and also the project of building your own house and the challenges and pit falls involved in such a massive project.

Hi Neil, I'm Jenni, Hubby Andy is an engineer. We're in Cheshire too, by Chester, where are you? We're relatively new to the site too and going for a permanent visa. We have 2 daughters 13 and 9 who are looking forward to the move. We will also be looking south of perth we think, been looking around Waikiki, Baldivis, Rockingham and Port Kennedy.

QUESTION - would you have made a purchase while under the 457? Looks a venture well up my street .

They have an advert here, about the 'right side of the road', and it's true, anything west of Marmion ave (beach side) will cost you a lot more to buy. We are in Carramar, and the beach is a ten minute drive. Burns beach is nice, and a lot of building going on. Good luck.

I'm a group newbie too, with my flight ticket booked for 26th July. Daughter will follow mid August and hubby early September. It's our way of trying to lower the risk of everyone being unemployed at the same time!

 

We are all PR status having lived in Sydney before spending the last few years in the UK. Perth is somewhere we have visited and liked so hope we will quickly find work (husband is an accountant and I'm AAT/administration if you see anything useful, please Neil ) and settle.

Hi, we're in a very similar position to you by the sounds of it - We live in Liverpool at the moment & we're moving to Perth in 12 weeks. My hubby is heading out first too just like yourslef (on 26th June), and I follow with the kids in mid-July. He will use his time there to do the same, adminy practical stuff and finding somewhere to live.

 

We're doing research on the forum too, and wanting to make connections, so if you're interested and fancy a beer once you're over there i'm sure my husband (Gregg) would oblige and you could compare notes on what you've found so far!!

 

Good luck with your move, we're just starting our goodbyes now and the whole rollercoaster of emotions that comes with such a move!

Hello and welcome, While I was reading all posts I saw the words, "sale of home" in UK being mentioned. I thought I would pass on my experience. When I migrated to Australia, I didn't know that I had to sell the house there. I only realised and regretted selling it after some time especially when I saw how the real estate market went crazy over there in 80s. After your move here, it is good idea to get to know the place and rent for a while. Getting other people's view about areas is good and of course you would consider future equity growth too. However, if you are like me then as well as the practicality of real estate you would do your own research depending on your needs such as school, work etc.

Hi, I hope things are moving along well for you in the anticipation of your big move. I do agree with the other as far as the choice of suburb is concerned. These days, at least thanks to internet, choosing a rental property is easier. Fremantle is nice but its not for everyone plus the property is much dearer than some of the expanding suburbs such as Success. There are neat little suburbs around South Perth such as East Vic Park, St James, Como and Manning etc. Currently, it is buyer's market so hopefully you will find something in your budget on your arrival.
